Given the current levels of obesity and the associated health risks with sitting all day - I think these are great. Just being able to stand when you feel like it seems like a good thing.

I wish I had a treadmill desk, but the standing desk I do have is pretty sweet.

Hey, sometimes I want some one else to mix my drinks.

Yeah, after hearing about it on NPR this morning, I wound up wishing I could get one of these where I work.

I would love to have one of these, mainly because I think better when I am moving. Sitting at a desk drives me crazy after a while.

That isn't new, we've had "walking workstations" at my office for a while now in the exercise room. What WOULD be news is if someone had started using the energy created by walking to power the workstation. Now THAT would be progress. Matrix, here we come!

I'm gonna need stilts if I'm gonna continue to fark my assistant on her desk. But she could use the excercise, getting too many rounded corners lately.

Newest? And as a fat lazy desk jocky... I'd do it. I'm over weight because I'm physically inactive. Sure, I could exercise outside of work, but that eats into my video game and love making time. I'm only human!

NPR actually interviewed an office worker while he was using his treadmill desk. You couldn't tell he was in motion throughout the whole conversation. If you walk at around 2 MPH he said, you could do quite a few tasks required of a desk job. Not all, mind you, but many.

so why don't they have it to where you have to walk to generate electricity to power the computer?
Not only lose weight, but save money for the electric bill at the same time.

/win-win

most people are overweight because they have a crappy diet. It is really hard to burn enough calories by cardio alone. Still, these desks are a good idea if nothing else than to prevent heart disease.

The couch in the CFOs office is more comfy. And there's nobody in the office on weekends.

Heck, at one place I worked, they had an employees suggestion box.

I suggested an exercise room. Nothing much, maybe a treadmill and exercise bike, maybe a couple of weight machines, nothing much, but maybe people could do something productive on their breaks or lunch.

The boss practically laughed that one out of the room, said no way would they buy exercise equipment, and even if they did they were scared shiatless of the liability concerns if an employee hurt themselves on the job while exercising.

You ever try those shoes with the toes built in?

Pretty soon they'll start hooking up generators to these things, and aside from your office drone work, you will be required to produce a certain amount of kwh.

I promise you that will be considered normal in about 50 years. I picture my former big bank IT department.. Smelling like sweat and mold like an old used up locker room. Actually, nothing would really change there except the pointless treadmill is right out there in the open.

i setup my treadmill as a desk for a little while to try this out. Just clamped a bookshelf - shelf to the handles and set my laptop on that.

The results were iffy. If i did not have to do any major thinking (i'm a software developer), like if i was just pounding out some boilerplate then it was fine, i could walk and code all day. However, my mindless code monkey days are rare now and I have to spend a lot more time thinking though larger problems and thats when the treadmill becomes too distracting and I end up back at my desk.

It's a convenient height for become a cunning linguist, and that lets her finally enjoy it for once.

I have already set one of these up at home. If you set it to walk speed you can play FPS shooters reasonably well and do office work easily.

sure haven't

special20: Hasn't that been around for a while?

Yes, but now that the holy lord and ruler of Fark and the world; NPR, hath taken it upon their gracious selves to bestow it upon us, now it's a "thing".

/I stand at my desk sometimes because I can't stand the sitting
//no company will ever put this much money into the lowly filthy employees' workstations

Or we could just walk more, both in the office and the world at large.

I'll only switch to a treadmill desk if they let me smoke in the office.

Who cares if she enjoys it? Like most women, she doesn't care as long as I give her a raise and tell her she's the hottest chick in the office.

Yeah I'm sure having a desk you can't sit at goes over really well when you are pulling a 12 hour, 'Oh shiat we lost the TPS coversheet for the Johnson account!' emergency situation.

That's the reason I don't think this will take off. Some people (not all, but enough) are just out to game the system. You put treadmills at their desk, they're going to find a way to fall off and disable themselves at the company's expense.

I could also see it hurting morale. Some jerk in the office is going to take it upon themselves to be everyone's personal trainer. Plus it's going to bring out some people's competitive streak.

And yes. I wouldn't want to work in a place that smells like a locker room.

Go with AnthroCart Desks, specifically the Elevate 2 is a good entry level desk that moves very easily up and down.
