Ok, Thats it.

We've lost it.

We had it, we lost it, start over.

I don't even know who we is, or what I am talking about, but this is truly how I feel. We messed up, back up, start over.

What scares me is that the Indians have essentially legislated political correctness into existence. If equality between the classes is to be reality, then the lower castes should be able to take insults just as much as they should be able to accept protections. Instead India seems to be ending up with a government of the Untouchables, by the Untouchables, and for the Untouchables. That's not what Gandhi had in mind when he fought for independence from the British.

Really? I know you're being facetious here, but consider the opposite case.

Whenever I think "Man, I really hate those guys, I wish the law could be changed to make it difficult for them", I remember that any law that can be used to suppress dissent that I don't approve of can also be used to suppress dissent that I do approve of.

Or, to put it another way, before I decide that I like something, I try to imagine how it might be abused by my worse nightmare of an administration. That almost always cools my enthusiasm for things like that.

The good thing is that this has led to a massive backlash against the cops and the people who complained. A couple of Chief Justices have also written to the Chief Minister of that state asking for an explanation and if nothing is forthcoming (and it won't, there was nothing inflammatory about the status) to drop the charges. That, at the very least, will set a legal precedent.

Gandhi desired self-determination for the country of India. He did not want it to be a vassal state to the British Empire.

But at the same time he understood that you couldn't just let the human refuse in your country run the show. Smart people should lead. Uneducated bumpkins should be led. Otherwise you end up with a giant mess as the greedy commoners vote themselves all sorts of benefits at the expense of the middle and upper classes.

Free speech existed for a limited time as a concept. Then speech got cheapened and finally, free speech was being used to protect agitation instead of intelligent commentary. The result was the conversion of most of our protected speech to spam. As a result, people are now viewing free speech as spam and are more comfortable banning some of it.

Nelson Mandela vs Winnie Mandela in some respects.

However you intimated earlier that India had legislated itself in to a caste system. Not so. The caste system existed before us Brits ever got there and they've happily turned it in to legislation.

British protectorate nations: You can never be truly free until you've slaughtered a bunch of brits. It's a proven fact, it's unfortunate and it's ugly, but it has been adequately demonstrated. You have to remove their system and form a different one. It sdoesn't have to be that radically different- but it's clear that there's something missing from your charter or constitution or whatever. Just advice, you don't have to take it.
They invented the C word because it was so needed in their lands.

While I agree that many of the places in that region are extremely sexist... this article isn't really about that. TFA mentions more men arrested for 'free speech' than it does women. You don't have to scream 'SEXIST!' every time a man says 'woman.'

It's just a natural extension of their culture. When your country is the IT clearing house of everyone elses, you gotta abide by your work regulations regarding social media.

/why yes, this was stereotypical and offensive. Why do you ask?
//This is also a country which has SEVERE problems with civil liberties, depending on what province you're in. It's not uncommon to see honor killings, caste killings, and extrajudicial punishment in some of the more rural areas.
