Long, long ago, Black Friday sales started on a day called "Friday". Ah, those halcyon days of innocence, when retailers cared about employees, elves could pass sex offender background checks, and no one cared about nativity scenes (Not safe for work language)

Well since they know it's futile to try to increase aggregate total holiday spend, they just have to get to your wallet before the other retailers.

Indeed. No one (shoppers I mean) should show up for this crap. Make sure retailers understand that this is not a money-making proposition.

Here's a novel idea - DON'T GO SHOPPING ON THANKSGIVING!!!!

But I suspect many people will revere consumerism more than family and have an issue with that suggestion.

Most people care more about $5 blu rays and a very slight possibility of getting $200 off of an hdtv than the store employees being treated like people.

I would also suggest to people that you avoid grocery stores, restaurants, bars, gas stations, convenience stores, etc if you don't like people having to work on holidays.

Dont think stores should open and make employees work? Start your own and see how long you last closing on major shopping days.

Don't shop on Thanksgiving.

The stores will open, and if nobody shows up, they'll get the message, and then next year they won't open on Thursday.

We live a few miles from a huge factory store mall on I-5, which starts it's "Midnight Madness" on Thursday night. People will actually park on the side of the interstate and jump the fence to get to the stores.

This time of year it's fun to watch Chinese tourists snatching up cheap Chinese imports from the stores.

Done in three.

As a hardened vet of many a Black Friday, shiat like this is why I left retail. The main problem is that the brick-and-mortar stores are getting their asses handed to them by online retailers (and Wal-Mart), so they have to "follow the leader" (Wal-Mart), or risk getting left behind. The only reason they're doing this is because they're desperate to make the numbers look good to stay afloat for another few years.

But then we blame the workers for deigning to try and make something better for themselves.

Christmas as we know it? Yes, it's a marketing ploy, but Christmas was actually a Christian holiday to overlook the pagan festivities those damn peasants were celebrating.

Valentine's Day is a Job Creator's holiday through and through.

I'm guessing if consumers didn't shop on that day, retailers would not be open that day.

Hey did you know there's a considerable (and growing) part of the US population that really doesn't give two hoots about some gringos that had dinner with some natives eleventy billion years ago? It's true!

So make your choice to celebrate this long passed dinner, or go stand in line for 4 days to get a 40" TV for 200 bucks. But one way or another, STOP CRYING LIKE A BABBY.

No, actually, it's disgusting that you oppose capitalism. Black Friday shopping should be compulsory. There is absolutely no reason that an able-bodied male or female should not support Wal-Mart, Apple, Best Buy, and others in their greatest time of need.

People want the door busters discounts. Problem is the supplies are usually limited. If they held back some of that inventory until Friday I think a lot of people would prefer to wait.

Truer words have never been written.

Not to mention the fact that they could be holding a Black Friday sale on my brother's front lawn and I still wouldn't be able (or want) to get off the couch on Thanksgiving Night. That night is for eating, drinking with your family and falling asleep on the couch during the football games.

Back in the 90s, I worked at a Kmart store. I can't tell you how many times a day I would have people say to me, "It's a real shame you have to work on Thanksgiving!" Yeah, go home and they won't open on Thursday.

/We won't even talk about the preacher who used to come in on Sundays to give us sermons about working on Sunday, while he was shopping...

I saw this one after I posted my comment about Kmart. In the 90s, on all those Thanksgivings when I was at work at Kmart, Walmart was closed.

Black Friday would be fun if stores didn't play the limited stock, no rain check game. Even if I get in line two hours before the store opens, most of the better deals are gone by the time I get inside.

Fry's Electronics is one of the worst offenders. They'll have super deal on a TV listed on the front page of their Black Friday flier, but then only have 10 or 20 in stock. It is just a scam to build excitement and get you into the store. They figure that even if the product you want isn't in stock, you'll still pick something up so that you don't consider your time wasted.

And fark the retailers for store opening creep. Double fark the ones that have gone into Thursday night. Triple fark the customers who enable them to do so.

That's what it really comes down to. My neighbor last year was all proud of shopping from midnight until 5am so that she'd be guaranteed "deals" on some stuff she wanted. Sorry, my sleep hours have a value, and it is no less than $25/hour. An entire night to save $100 on a TV, followed by a day of completely-awake little kids that won't let you nap?

F*CK THAT NOISE.

JerseyTim: I try not to be judgmental, but if you go to a pre-Black Friday sale on Thanksgiving Day, you're a bad person.

They are the root of the problem. I have a bunch of kids, too, and I also recognize that retail employees have families as well. I shop during awake-time hours. I'm not going to contribute to the free-market-induced madness, no matter how inconsequential my voting dollars are.

I do try my best to avoid all of those things. Stay home with family and relax. I realize that some people will always have to work thanksgiving (emergency personnel and other critical positions) but it is possible to keep that to the bare essentials.
