Why won't tech companies let us freely use terms that already enjoy wide circulation and legitimacy?

Because they're trying to sell themselves to Mom and Pop as well as young people. Next question.

A BASTION of openness and counterculture, Silicon Valley

Ahhhh hahahahahahahah, no it ain't neither. It's mostly arrogant douchebags who want to supplant the OLD arrogant douchebags and pin them down and say "SNIFF MY BUTT!" The brief hiccup of actual counterculture that said "maybe we shouldn't all be huge dicks and try and just live" was dismantled by the money farmers as quickly as possible and by any means they could use, long ago, because there's no money in people just siting around eating fresh fruit and saying "I'm good, thanks." Counterculture. Oh, Prunella.

So IOW certain demographics are upset that automated algorithms don't exempt them from the literal hit qualifications and some technotard at the NYT expects technology to be problem free 100% of the time and issues can only be due to some shady illuminati masters laughing uproariously as they crash the live feed of Neil Gaiman. Maybe they didn't like American Gods either.

It's a known fact that only Liberals, like Tipper Gore, are in favor of censorship. Liberals hate free speech. They despise it. They know that their own views don't hold up to the scrutiny of The Truth™, so they find it necessary to silence anyone who disagrees with them.

Servers are private property. The sites you can comment on are not generally government run, so freedom of speech does not apply.

When you post on a server, you are at the mercy of the administrators running it. What says, goes.
It has always been this way, it will always be this way.

Even 4chan moderates content.

The idea of "freedom of speech" on the internet is a laughable myth.

So algorithms are causing internet censorship. Some people think this hits too close to home, while others may find it a biatcheeky.

It's interesting. Shakespeare had an enormous influence on standardizing the use of English. The Torah has kept Hebrew intact for millennia, as have Chinese characters for Chinese. People will do whatever they are going to do, but it's actually a good thing that there's a modicum of stability as English goes totally worldwide.

That's what Fox News and the Fatman told you to believe. Because they censored out all liberal point of view. At least they legitimately mindraped you so you won't get pregnant, your body has a way of shutting all that down.

And so, the admins of a given site could choose to NOT moderate content as well, correct? Free speech is alive and well on the internet, as much as in any other space and much more than in most public spheres. But that doesn't mean someone else has to pay your way because they owe you a forum, numbnuts. Pay up and go to town!

yup. If you don't like the way free speech is going on the net, run your own server and be king of your own little fiefdom.

Also, be prepared to face legal action for people using your free speech haven for criminal activity.
