Over the last 3,500 years the petroglyphs adorning the rock faces in the eastern Sierras have withstood, flood, fire, and earthquake, but they were no match for asshat thieves with rocksaws and power hammers

Sorry. Pet peeve. "Sierra" is not supposed to be pluralized--it means "mountain range," and you don't really mean to say "mountain ranges" here. I know people from outside the area make this mistake all the time, but most locals don't. At least TFA gets it right.

Anyway, turning to the substance of the article:

You know, the BLM seems to be failing pretty hard at protecting these resources. Last year defacement happened at Red Rocks, which is BLM managed. Luckily they found the assholes that did it. But still. It happened.

Well, considering the fact that these folks were able to get power tools into the back country, I would say the BLM needs to step up having actual people on the ground walking the trails and going through sensitive areas on a more regular basis. That's how Hueco Tanks is protected and most acts of vandalism are petty and generally easily fixed. This kind of thing cannot be /stopped/ but it sure as hell can be reduced. The fact that folks used power tools to cut chunks monzontie boulders without a soul noticing shows there's problem.

Sort of. From what I've read about professional art theft, they usually know someone they can sell to (or at least through) before committing the crime. That's part of why the recovery rate is somewhere below 10%. It's not like you're going to catch them trying to fence a famous painting through the usual channels, and it would be basically valueless to a thief without the right connections.

It would have to be more than occasional. Scrap theives here took up a freaking railroad line and no one noticed. Hell these people may have stolen the rocks in broad daylight, provided they had hardhats and orange vests and the lead one were carrying a clipboard, people would have just assumed they must belong there. Some of the best theives the world have ever known tend to hide in plain sight.

So, you don't think the BLM is handling this issue correctly, and your suggestion to them would be to increase their payroll?

Err, uhm, I'm not really sure how best to put this, but I think they already know this, Einstein. Go get them more money and I'll betcha they'll be happy, delighted, to make it happen.

Tried it once, during highschool. I am never doing it ever, ever again. The one leading the trip was this semi-sociopath asshat idiot that was half-way insane. Led me to some very murky, murky trips. Threw up right afterwards, and had nightmares about it for about three days straight.

Other than that... No, just bad.

On the article at hand though, this sort of vandalism is not new. The museum I worked with was also the regional office of the Historic Preservation Institute, and we usually heard horror stories about tourists that stole/tried to steal tiny pieces of murals, carvings, and fossils from sights.
