Durian pie! |
| raerae1980 Mmmmmmm pie. I was wanting to make a Pecan pie, not necessarily for tomorrow, but sometime soon. Any suggestions, besides what I can find on google? |
| JerseyTim You know, I had never considered the possibility of orange meringue pie. I'd try that. |
| Lumpmoose I don't want to hear some jerk saying, "Oh yes there is an orange pie, I Googled it, here is the weird recipe right here." Just because some weirdo made it does not make it a common pie. "Why is no one making orange pie? WTF is wrong with people?" Here's a recipe for orange pie. "STFU weirdo!!" |
| flucto JerseyTim: You know, I had never considered the possibility of orange meringue pie. I'd try that. I think it would be disappointingly mild. Orange chiffon pie would probably work though. |
| Diogenes I make a nice Orange Poppyseed Cake. No pies, though. |
| Arthur Jumbles Okay, so why is orange pie not popular? Anybody ever have one? I'm assuming it tastes too sweet for a pie. |
| MaudlinMutantMollusk This one looks good, too link |
| Krieghund The tangerines on my tree are *almost* ripe, and in about a month, my neighbors will show up with the oranges they picked but can't eat. A pie sounds like a great idea. I'm thinking something like a key lime pie, only using orange juice instead of lime juice. |
| Diogenes Arthur Jumbles: Okay, so why is orange pie not popular? Anybody ever have one? I'm assuming it tastes too sweet for a pie. I would think too acidic. |

| Rincewind53 Arthur Jumbles: Okay, so why is orange pie not popular? Anybody ever have one? I'm assuming it tastes too sweet for a pie. I'm going to say it's primarily to do with the fact that it's a citrus fruit, and there are only two really common citrus fruit pies; key lime, and lemon meringue. Both of those work because the amount of sugar you have to put in them is balanced by the extremely sour nature of the fruit. Oranges, on the other hand, are much more sweet, so I'd imagine an orange pie done in those ways would probably be cloyingly sweet. |
| LockeOak
Citrus pies don't work unless they're meringue/cream based, due to the structure of the fruit. They have no structural integrity; they're either intact wedges or a mush of fiber with juice everywhere. There's not enough fiber to use them for anything except flavoring, like in key lime pie. Cooking a conventional pie with one would be pretty gross. |
| teto85 We make Orange Marmalade instead. Rincewind53 said it, the sweetness does make an orange pie cloying. Make it with about 1/2 - 2/3 the sugar of a lemon pie. Have fun experimenting. |

Orange pie? Fer us'n old Florida Crackers, it's more likely than you think. 1 c. flour, self-rising 1 c. sugar 1 c. oranges 1 c. milk 1 stick butter Think peach cobbler but made with oranges... and better tasting. |
| Sybarite Interesting, now I've found a couple of recopies I'll have to give a shot next summer. |
| Sybarite That was a weird autocorrect. |
| gilgigamesh This is actually a question that has kept me up at night for years. I am not kidding. OK, I am exaggerating a bit. But I have wondered for years why there are no orange pies. I clicked the link with eager anticipation that my question would be answered, and sadly the article failed to deliver anything except validation of my question. |

Perhaps it's for the same reason banana jam isn't all that common. |

We love watermelon too, yet there are no watermelon pies. That's racist? |

Diogenes: Arthur Jumbles: Okay, so why is orange pie not popular? Anybody ever have one? I'm assuming it tastes too sweet for a pie. I would think too acidic. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ /maybe the folks who like lime and lemon will crave it, tho //hates lime pie and lemon pie, too tart even with the added sickly sweetness |

Because it would be wrong. |

I had an orange-ginger custard pie the other day. It was like sex, but I had it. |
| borg Dead for Tax Reasons: Durian pie! My wife is Indonesian & loves durian. There is such a thing as durian pie and other durian filled pastries. She makes durian milk shakes all the time. Any Asian owned bakery will have durian goodies(sic). |

I read this exchange in Jim Gaffigan's voice, it was amusing. /Hey buddy, I like orange pie |

I think a pointless tag would have been more appropriate as this was far from interesting. |

FrancoFile: We love watermelon too, yet there are no watermelon pies. That's racist? Could you even make such a thing? I mean, it's mostly water. Perhaps you could flavor something with the juice and then bake that? |
| ackb4r
Orange segments probably would not being able to hold up to the baking. They would just liquify. I guess you could make a meringue or something. |

Best comment FTA: "I hate oranges and the first Google hit for "orange pie" is a recipe for "Robert E. Lee's orange pie," so I think we have all the arguments we need against orange pie right here. But I do love when Jim Cooke gets drunk." I think we have a winrar! |

I'm not an orange fan, but you would probably have a better shot making it into a cobbler/crumble/crisp/crunch rather than pie. It's a better way to make any kind of fruit dessert anyway. |

DeathCipris: I would also like to add..."Fruit good, cake great, fruit cake, nasty crap." does orange slice cake count? :) |

suthrnrunt: DeathCipris: I would also like to add..."Fruit good, cake great, fruit cake, nasty crap." does orange slice cake count? :) Nah, we are talking specifically about "fruit" cake. The brick you send off to relatives around the holidays that no one ever eats. |

| The My Little Pony Killer
Oranges as fruits, juices and candies are one thing. Oranges as part of pastries taste disgusting. |
| Im_Gumby
nyrB: And where's the blue food, man? We want the blue food!! There's a great recipe for blue waffles on the internet... but the pictures really do it justice. |
