So that is why Honey Boo-boo is so happy. |

The obesity gene helps protect against depression. So how come I still feel sad after eating an entire cheesecake? JUST WHEN I MANAGED TO LOOSE 5 POUNDS FROM MY BUTT I AM SICK OF THIS STUPID MEN WORLD |

Besides, haven't you heard of chubby chasers? /5'2", 200lbs, 38F boobs Based on these figures (heh), you're long past "chunky." But it's not about aesthetics - it's about health. What is your blood pressure? Cholesterol level? Blood sugar level? Can you run a mile, and if so, in what time? How many situps can you do? If you're healthy, rock on, girl. If not - you have a problem, and the fact that you're getting laid isn't going to solve it. And I speak as a former fat person. /Former fatty who just bested her 10K personal best by 7 minutes |

Nogale: ...If you're healthy, rock on, girl. If not - you have a problem, and the fact that you're getting laid isn't going to solve it... I dunno, it's a good bit of cardio. Depends on how often and for how long. |

| Real Women Drink Akvavit dopekitty74: And on another note, maybe we're happy because we eat and enjoy good food instead of starving ourselves for an ideal look? THIS. My weight fluctuates wildly, but I've never given it much thought. I worked in one very poorly organized, more under staffed than usual restaurant for a time and wore a pedometer to work one day for kicks and giggles. I logged over 10 miles in one shift, so that explained why I was quite thin. Nearly anorexic looking. The restaurant I was just working at for nearly a decade closed, so now I'm a chubster again. I do not care, I will still slaughter the rest of that pumpkin pie today! It's all the pie's fault anyway. /no one ever suspects the pie |

It was a hilly course, with most of the uphills after the 7k mark. Also cold and rainy, most of us were soaked through by the time we started. Waterlogged sneakers - hardly optimal conditions. |

Also, situps are a no-go because of my boobs and back. Plus fibromyalgia doesn't help either. I walk alot, eat very little fast food or pop, blood pressure is fine, cholesterol and blood sugar also fine (just had bloodwork done a few months back, and i was working at kfc at that point, so if it was gonna be high, it would've been then) i eat lots of fish, veggies, rice and homemade soups and such. Stay away from processed food wherever possible. |

Interesting theory, and that could explin why since I've put on a few several quite a lot of extra pounds it doesn't affect me so much anymore, certainly not as much as in the past. I've been depressed since my late teen years, and although it comes and goes it is certainly not as detrimental as previously. Lots of us do have EIP ;) I'm not quite a geneticist but I work with a few of them. The idea is this gene is actually a marker for an ancestral mutation that has statistical association to 8% increase in BMI. The mechanism is still unknown because the body is so complex. It's a fat depositor protein and thats going to have impacts on everything from metabolism to neural development. |

No I got rid of the extremely irritating partner a couple years ago. Oh, strange, the email was set to tf only. my mistake. -- to be relevant I looked up the mutation the article is talking about http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/projects/ SNP/snp_ref.cgi?rs=9939609 It seems to be nearly 50% prevalent in african and european populations, about about 15% in east asian populations. A common mutation like that will be spread around pretty evenly and must have a very small effect. Strong effects are selected for or against more harshly, but this mutation has survived thousands of generations. It's not that the FTO gene is present in some people, just this version of it. The statistics don't lie, but they don't say a whole lot either. The molecular bio talks about chemical signaling for other gene regulation, so it's not a clear mechanism. also interesting, Entrez, a biology encyclopedia says FTO "Contributes to the regulation of the global metabolic rate, energy expenditure and energy homeostasis." supporting the hypothesis that energy storage is the root here. |
