I think that would be just plain air flow. if it were earths rotation then the air around it would be moving relative to the surface. otherwise we would always be facing a prevailing wind due to rotation.

The Redoubt eruption was farking spectacular.

I was looking out my office window in Anchorage, facing across the inlet, just before sunset, with red rays dominating the ice caps of the range. (The pic in the article shows a later eruption in early 1990 after it reactivated with a big blow in Dec, 89, when the sun is in the South and the days are very short).

One cloud seemed a little odd. I glanced up again a few minutes later, and it had gotten noticeably wider and redder. I turned around to an engineer working nearby and asked him to explain that (I was pretty fresh off the boat to Alaska).

"Holy Christ. I think that's Redoubt!" We all gathered at the window to watch it getting wider and redder as the sun approached the horizon. It looked like a very slow-motion nuke film.

Within a few hours, the sun was down, and tiny pieces of glass started coating the city. I watched it build up on a windshield wiper until the weight forced it to roll laterally, then build up again until it rolled, etc. The next morning, everything was coated in black glass.

There was also the little matter of the brand new 747 flying directly through the ash cloud, killing all four engines at once, dropping 14,000 feet, and sandblasting the plane. They finally got the engines restarted and were able to land safely.

I'll remember those few days to my grave. Goddamned impressive, these volcano thingies.

Heh, those commercials confused me as a kid back in the late 80s. I kept seeing them and thinking, "WTF, the study of volcanoes is called vulcanology, dumbsh*t, what is this 'dianetic' nonsense?" Later I supposed that it was some fictional book about volcanoes but it didn't sound interesting, and had I read it I'd likely have thrown it away in favor of some good nonsensical fiction, like Hitchhiker's Guide or something. :P
