   Social media drove a whopping 34% of all Black Friday online sales. Would you believe 3.4%? How about 0.34%?

That's pretty consistent with the last 12 or so years of online sales. Still better odds than a mass email by about 50%. It basically shows that people will ultimately buy something if they have the available funding and want it.

Social media is excellent in helping people not buy something, however.

My Facebook coupon group saved me a ton of money yesterday. I snatched up three of the $125 i7 laptops from Radio Shack, two 16GB iPad 2s for $250 from Amazon, and a bunch of $1 TB flash drives from NewEgg. It's so much better when a group of people are finding deals and reporting back rather than just one person alone. Where else would I have gotten a 32 GB Wii U for under $150? People can mock social media all they want, but if you have the right group of people together, then there's a lot of money to be saved.

That's a pretty flat understanding of marketing. Sure, direct ROI is pretty dismal from social media, but if that's what you're after, you're doing it wrong.

I mean, most advertising is saturated enough as it is. Can they really expect people to click through from Facebook when they can easily type the f*cking address into their browsers?

This reminds me very much of fundraising, where "this year" is absolutely, positively the year where social media-driven giving will become important. As if the multimillionaires who give the lion's share of charitable donations are sitting there thinking, "I was going to give all my money to State U., but I've been totally swayed by this cute Facebook ad for the local SPCA! Those puppies will be eating off of gold plates from now on!"

It's not their fault. Most people would rather run the risk of dying for that one dvd player in Wal-mart than have the choice of several online for the same price with only the risk of tripping and falling on a keyboard.

Facebook has gone too MySpace with the ads. They've exploded on the site since going public. I'm finally I'm favor of a dislike button just so I can ban certain brands from my feed. I don't give a shiat if my friends like Wal-Mart. I hate the store and don't want it's ads.

Rollover the post. Click on the arrow that appears. Select "Hide..." then select the "Hide all stories from...". Also: Adblock plug-in for FF hides all the ads in the margins.

This article is silly. Why link social media to black friday sales? Link them to cyber monday sales. I'm sitting at a computer of some sort while reading social media. It's much easier to click a link and buy something online than to fight a crowd at a store. I completely ignore email/social media ads that require me to use their coupon "in store only" (unless it's a dine in restaurant).

/ bought something yesterday from a local merchant, online, thanks in part to a twitter message

It's not so much that social media is failing, but the demographic of social media is morphing. Each generation has its own way of using technology. Once it was BBSs, chat rooms and forums. Then came email, blogging, then texting, and now Facebook and Twitter. Each of these technologies had one thing in common: the largest group of users were teenagers and young adults. As these people aged, they turned to other forms of social interaction. Older people use social media, but at rates far lower than the young. So FB users are just growing up and are not so interested in it as they once were. What's next? Probably face-to-face interaction via mobile devices. Apple already has a solution with FaceTime and others do too. This is why anyone who invested in FB for anything other than a short-term pop is going to lose money. FB's time in the sun will end in just a few years. If anything appeals to teenagers more than anyone else, it has a limited shelf life. What's popular with teens today, will be old and busted to the next generation.

Oh, I don't know. The 8 paragraph rant by an owner of a restaurant/movie-tv theater (brew and view, minus the alcohol) about how a family of 8 and their noisy kids caused people to walk out the door as soon as they walked in, was interesting.

Especially the part where the parents ignored everything after "could you please have your kids behave a little. Customers are.." and went into 40 second yelling rant. Stormed out of the restaurant. And caused 20 regulars to leave because the owner "told" said parents that the kids were spoiled brats who should be sat in a corner after being spanked. Never mind that there were people who recorded the conversation. he didn't say it. People I know that is.

His rant wound up bringing back 15 of those regulars who had gone on to tell everyone they knew to never try the restaurant. It almost got blackballed because a couple of precious snowflakes had their parents wrapped in a noose.

Its simple, people learn to ignore internet ads. Those who don't use an ad blocker just stop paying attention to them after a while. Even those ads that pop up on your screen when you load a page get ignored, all I'm looking at is where the little X is to close them out, I honestly couldn't tell you what the hell they were for.
