You just KNOW that you'd get a Tarantino trunk-perspective shot of Ralphie's dad taking the tire iron out of the car trunk after the tire goes flat.

Protective custody? Seriously?

I know a lot of stuff that our parents did is no longer acceptable, but trying a "home remedy" before going to the doctor does not seem justification for taking the child out of the home.

Honestly, his kid is not me.

I'd have pulled my own BB out. My buddies have a story of dicking around with bow and arrows and one kid got an arrow in the shoulder. He pulled it out and waited a day or two to tell his folks about it. He still had the scar. It was a circualr pock mark. Luckily it was a 30lb test recurve and not a real bow.

yeah... I remember my dad taking a needle or razor blade to splinters and other stuff I injured myself with. I once got a pretty sizable iron filing stuck really deep in my palm. when we couldn't get to it with a needle or razor, we put some ichthammol and a bandage over it for a couple of days to draw it out. You don't go to a hospital for minor crap you can take care of at home. if you do, YOU are the reason our healthcare costs are spiraling out of control. " jimmy umberto has the sniffles... better call an ambulance and go to the ER.

for fark's sake... we're getting to the point where telling a kid to "walk it off" is enough to get that kid put in protective custody.

Hate to see what they would've done to the father if he removed a splinter without a fully staffed operating room on standby.

Jebus! You just push it back out through the hole it made.

We used to have bb gun wars. One rule was "No head shots". Rick took up a prone position in the park and was plunking us pretty good. Leo had a Daisy rifle with a pump. He was supposed to be limited to three pumps per shot but he got ticked and cranked a few extra pumps in to it and shot Rick right in the forehead. We thought Leo had killed him. There was blood everywhere. Turns out, Rick was slightly anemic so we washed him down in the water fountain. The bb had gone in and moved a couple of inches up so we pushed it back down until it we could pop it back out. Then Rick went home and told his mom that some kid threw a rock at him. She was already drunk so she told us to go out and hunt the bastard down.

Something similar happened to a grade school friend of mine.....minus the utility knife. My friend shot himself in the hand with a Crosman 760. His father refused to take him to the hospital because the law required medical professionals to report all gunshot injuries to the police. The wound festered for a week or so and the old man finally relented and took the kid to the ER. Yup, the police were called, but the father was ready. Before he took the kid in, dad cooked up a story and spent hours rehearsing it with the kid before he took him to the hospital. The cops know they were lying, but dad and son stuck to their story, so nothing came of it. BTW, BB passed clear through his hand. The treatment consisted of antibiotics and a bandage.

think about it like this, a splinter or a shard of glass in yoru kids finger. You get an exacto, cleanse it with alcohol and fire... then try and remove it. You are not successful so you take your kid to the doctor the next morning.

you are then charged and your child taken from you.

Unless their is some sadism in the fathers actions here I don't see a place to charge the man.

Exactly... The father tried the simple solution (open the wound a bit, try to force it out method), that didn't work, so he brought the kid in to the hospital to be looked at. Why waste hours in an ER for something you can handle at home in 5 minutes (usually)?

Hell, I've had my shoulder 'relocated' at home by my uncles after a minor farming accident. Hurt like hell, but it took 2 minutes instead of an hour long drive to the hospital, then a 5 hour wait in the ER, and that's not considering the damage the swelling would have caused after 6 hours when the doctor slammed it back in.
