| syrynxx This is not about helping people with disabilities. It's about watching porn with both hands free. |

| vpb I wonder how long it will be before someone combines one of these wearable display glasses with one of those EPOC headsets. We will be able to text and watch pr0n while driving! |

| Cythraul Eye-controlled tablets? They don't have my brand. I have special eyes. |

| I_Am_Weasel Cythraul: Eye-controlled tablets? They don't have my brand. I have special eyes. You'd better get them to the patent office before you're paying Apple royalties. It may, however, be already too late. |

I don't see this being awkward or clunky at all. |

| NIXON YOU DOLT!!!!!
Wasn't this technology available YEARS ago for people with disabilities? Oh....yeah, it was. |
||
| rubi_con_man
This is already advanced enough that the technology is being taught at the graduate school level, and students are producing such work in about four weeks |

NIXON YOU DOLT!!!!!: Wasn't this technology available YEARS ago for people with disabilities? Oh....yeah, it was. They say that in the second sentence of the article. You DID read the article, right? RIGHT? |
||
| DerAppie
Two questions: what is this going to do with battery life and how resource intensive is this? Me thinks that running the camera continually and analysing the input will make it so that you can't really do anything other than turning pages in your e-book or open a browser. |

You DID read the article, right? RIGHT? There are articles to read? Huh. Oops. I thought we were just supposed to discuss snarky headlines. Now you want me to read actual ARTICLES? Crazy talk. |

syrynxx: This is not about helping people with disabilities. It's about watching porn with both hands free. I don't know. I'd get annoyed with the cursor hovering over the good parts. I'd have to watch it out of the corner of my eye. |

Considering one of my eyes is lazy and both twitch uncontrollably I will LOVE this development! /not |

I don't want my computer looking at me. |

| Jon iz teh kewl
so you swallow a tablet, and then you can move the cursor with your eyes?? |
||
| tommyl66
Those tablets are going to get sticky really quickly if I have to rub my eye on them every time I want to move the cursor. Much like where I sit I'll stick to my own thumb, thank you. |

I tried a prototype version of this but it kept zooming in on pictures of breasts. |

Yeah, but will this ever be as cool as the Atari Mindlink? *cough* |

Shepple! this is just another way for the mega corporations to track us. Not only will they know what we are looking at but what our facial reaction is. |

kdogg73: What happens when your eyes roll up in the back of your head? Rewinds current video back 10s so you don't have to stop to rewind to the good part. But of course, that depends on whether the developer wants to improve user experience or ad revenue. Given current trending, it will probably spawn a dozen 'meet Russian Singles' ads |

Why in the world would you use an active device like an infrared beam? Use a goddamn passive camera. They're in everything already. They don't take the power of an active system. They aren't dangerous. If the technology isn't there yet, I'll wait. |
||
| Cluckity
I'm sure this will be implemented as well as speech recognition, which is to say annoying as fark. |

CaesarSneezy: I don't see this being awkward or clunky at all. Especially when it comes to anything more interactive than just moving a mouse curser. Will we have to start training ourselves to left-blink, right-blink, double-blink, dual-blink? I'm sure that wouldn't lead to any cases of migraines or eye spasms AT ALL. Also, are we going to take a step back to reintroduce cursors to handheld devices? Because otherwise I'm predicting a source of mass-frustration with trying to type anything legible on a smartphone sized screen keyboard. This seems like one of those technologies that at first appears to be wonderful and innovative at the time, but then falls flat when it comes time to actually introduce it to the mass market. |

Sean M: Okay, who patented this already? Amazon? If merely glancing at a pop-up is enough to trigger the browser to go to the advertiser's website they'll make a mint off of this. Of course if you don't like it they'll disable this feature for you for an extra $20. |

Cluckity: I'm sure this will be implemented as well as speech recognition, which is to say annoying as fark. This. We don't examine things like video pictures and text by looking straight ahead, we scan the images continually, glance at our surroundings, check the clock, etc. Sure, it could be good for people with disabilities or for very specific applications, but please stop trying to make such things a selling point for everyday users. Much like the Kinnect for the XBOX. The input is very limited. It's easier to learn an input that is designed for the software(and been evolving and becoming more efficient for decades), and get more out of it, than learn to use software that's With a stationary display/sensors that are not 360 degrees, you're always going to have limited input. Sure, it looks cool in a movie like Minority Report, but really not all that feasible on current technology. Reading is hard enough on the eyes, and having to stare intently at an icon for several seconds to turn the page or whatever is going to create strain. The more they shorten the span, the more it's going to happen unintentionally. No matter how they build it, it's going to be clunky and limited. Having said that, if they can't get manufacturers to bite, come out with a usb version of the light/camera as needed. If they can't do that, learn how to use the Kinnect like a shiat ton of other coders and science types already have. It's not like people who are limited to using their eyes to control their PC are going to inherently need the mobility derived from a tablet, a small-ish laptop would work just as well, and much of the ground work is already done. No need for tricking all of us non-users to subsidize the cost when the shiat is already out there for you to use. |
