1. It is not "heroic" to defend against your assailant, particularly your own offspring. His motivation being the escape of the students is not likely top of the list.

2. The students didn't escape anything. They weren't part of the plan.

The teacher was the target of the attacker, obviously he's going to fight back if he's getting attacked. The real question is, why did none of the students help? Why are we so glad that all of the students escaped unharmed?

1. It is not "heroic" to defend against your assailant, particularly your own offspring. His motivation being the escape of the students is not likely top of the list.
