| Hey, you know that heartwarming photo of the New York cop giving a "homeless" man a pair of boots? Yeah, he's not actually homeless. And he wants to get paid for that video |

Ingratitude is a terrible thing. |

The second most important thing will be to talk about how all homeless people are scammers who make tons of money by panhandling and nobody should ever give them anything. I foresee anecdotal evidence. Sweet, sweet, anecdotal evidence. |

Hell, if that's all true he's practically an entrepreneur. |

| cretinbob Tough shiat, you're on a public street in public view. |

| thisispete I'm reminded of that episode of South Park where Canada goes on strike for more Internet money. |

And next week we find out the police officer is actually a fireman. In all seriousness, I still think the cop did a good deed and that's very commendable. |
||
| rynthetyn Yet another example of how much of the "homeless" problem in this country is actually an "untreated mental health issues" problem. Homelessness is just a symptom of a larger problem. |

I wish the news would run a story on the "NYC Douchebag Gives Barefoot Homeless Man Idea He's Owed Millions Off Of Photo". Id like to hear how the homeless guy actually got that idea. And then listen to the douchebag who gave it to him try to explain how he was wrong considering it was taken in a Public Right Of Way. |

first, if he has someplace to stay why is he sitting on the sidewalk with no shoes? did he expect a cop, of all people, to give him a pair? second, put my picture all over the internet when i'm in a bad spot and i'll want a cut too. |

The cop is still a hero. |

| KrispyKritter i wonder if he was mentally ill before serving his country, or as a result of. either way, he served. it blows my mind that veterans are not hailed and treated as heroes by our farking government. if i was Great Dictator i would make damn sure anyone who had the balls to war for me was treated like a god. i don't understand this country, i never will. |

He has a story about how he used to give money to panhandlers till this one time, he gave the guy $5 and he pulled out a wad of bills and added the $5 to it as he thanked him. It was probably like $15 in ones, honestly... |

I read a different article that said the guy sold the boots because he wanted some pie. |

So very true...but not everyone, just the ones who saw combat. If you served and sat in a bunker in Nevada flying drones, you are awesome..but not Godlike imo |

Hillman has lived in Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing since 2011. As a former homeless veteran, I can say that is marginally better than being homeless. |
||
| mike_d85
FTFA: A few days after the viral photo was posted, The New York Times found Hillman barefoot again and asked about the $100 all-weather boots. Hillman said he'd hidden them because "they are worth a lot of money." Something is clearly wrong with this man. I wonder what he was like before he went coo-coo. |

Someone will no doubt quote the Journal of Ridiculous Bullshiat I Made Up Just Now to Bolster My Case and reference an article about some panhandler somewhere who, at the end of the day, walks round the corner, hops into his brand new SUV and drives home to his McMansion. This character archetype is quite popular in JORBIMUJNTBMC, and on Fox News stories, but strangely enough despite what a sweet deal this would seem to be, you never see people quitting their jobs to engage in the lucrative world of panhandling. It's very strange. |

You don't understand how the world of panhandling will be different now. |

AverageAmericanGuy: Ingratitude is a terrible thing. In the Adelson thread, you were rolling your eyes about class warfare. Here you're willing to smack down an AMERICAN VETERAN who is obviously mentally ill and only got the little he does have... through the Veteran's Administration office. The man needs more help than just a pair of shoes and some socks. He's right about being seen as just the recipient of someone else's kind gesture, he's right about being rendered invisible. He's gauche to put his wants as bluntly as pay me, but again, he's an American veteran who's not right in the head. Don't look at it as ungrateful. Look at it as .. he needs help. Taking the attitude that he's ungrateful will not get him, and others like him, the assistance he truly needs. Unless all folks were really happy about with that video were doing the easy noblesse oblige shiat and not the harder 'real solutions' shiat. |

The original story was less about the homeless guy and more about a man going out of his way to help someone he thought was in need. The thing about charity is that it has less to do with what the recipient does with the action, but more to do about the type of person who will think about and then go out of their way for others. |

Since he's on the streets, who would have killed him for those boots and socks? A few scuffs on the top and no one would have touched them. There were simpler ways to keep the boots. Yes, it would have been crappy to take new boots and make them ugly, but it would beat walking around in NYC barefoot in December. |

Veterans should be treated better than sports players imho. Second, panhandlers and beggars and such are BS artists and liars for the most part. One case I like to reference is when I was asked for change for a sandwich. I offered to buy the guy lunch and he refused. He said he really wanted a beer. So my thought is that many out there are just drunks and druggies. Another point is my half-brother who likes to ask for change at the gas station and walworld to buy smokes so when I get asked for money, I'm cold and say no most times. I've known some down n out ppl and I help em when I can so I'm not frozen, just cold. |
||
| Tat'dGreaser Read the article, the guy has mental problems and needs help. The NYPD officer did a noble thing and tried to help someone in need, end of story. |

Veteran as in actually fought and got injured, or veteran as in joined the military for a couple years and didn't do anything? We need to make the distinction. My brother is a veteran. He spent three years in Germany getting drunk in the 80s. Oh, we was an Apache mechanic. Good combo. |
||
| HotWingConspiracy
I knew that within days we would find out he either wasn't homeless, or was and immediately went and sold those boots. Doesn't change the sentiment of what the cop did, but it was naive. |

You should be giving that money to groups dedicated to helping the homeless and mentally ill. They can actually make good use of it what with not being crazy. |

Anybody who would sit in front of a shoe store in 25 degree weather with no shoes and raggedy pants, just to get donations/shoes is not right in the head. Still a nice gesture, even if he needs halidol more than boots. |
