| Well, in fairness to the construction crew, "carefully rennovate" DOES sound a lot like "completely demolish" |

| colinspooky I hate it when I mix up "oi, get off me" for "yes, that would be most nice". |

| Magorn Well if went down anything like it would have in the US, It started with the owner giving orders to the head contractor with a thick Russian accent. The Contractor bored and only half listening nodded a lot and said "sure, sure, boss, no problem we'll take care of it". Then he handed the Job off with vague instructions to a sub, who promptly rounded up half-a-dozen guys standing around in front of the local 7-11 to do the actual work, and trusted his foreman, who kinda speaks the worker's language a little bit, to give them instructions on what to do. |

You know who else completely demolished things in France? |

| Hack Patooey Russian "businessman" Dmitry Stroskin Businessman, eh? I think a construction company is about to be short a few workers/supervisors. |

Why didn't they mention who the construction company was? That's a bit odd. I mean, they're the ones to blame (supposedly), so it seems like their name would be in the first sentence. |

Well, the owner is a Russian 'businessman', so under no circumstances should anyone assume that this situation was an accident. Step 1: Buy rotting Chateau. Step 2: Talk up your plans to renovate it. Step 3: Hire a contractor and pay him extra (or perhaps less) to 'accidentally' demolish it. Step 4: Collect insurance money. Step 5: Rebuild an exact replica, which will therefore be new and modern and reliable and warm and quiet. Step 6: ??? Step 7: Profit !! |

Agent Smiths Laugh: You know who else completely demolished things in France? Romans, English, Franks, Goths, Huns, Norse, various other Germanic tribes? Did I miss any? Americans did a good job of trashing it in liberating it too. At this point, it's kind of a tradition. |

The "rebuild an exact replica" bit will be problematic. Materials become unavailable. Extraordinarily labor intensive methods were often used, which few people, or in some cases maybe even no people, know how to do anymore. It will have to meet modern building codes, too. That said, when you go to renovate or remodel an existing building, sometimes it does end up seeming like it would have been easier to just blow the farker up and start over. |

It was an elaborate insurance scam. |

140,000 square feet. That's fairly mind-boggling. You'd think that when getting an estimate for the demolition the price might have raised an eyebrow. |

It seems we hired the same company to remodel our kitchen. Long story short, we moved out for 3 weeks to let them do their thing and get the big surprise effect when it was ready. The wrong cabinets were delivered - which nobody seemed to notice, so they just went ahead and installed what could fit and left the rest in the garage for us. It took 2 months to get it fixed - and they actually had the balls to try to bill us for having the redo some of the drywall and paint. I've been a DIY'er ever since. |
