Friend of mine is a pianist in a jazz ensemble; said he'd probably slip in a bit of Take Five in one of his solos tonight. |

Jazz is terrible. It's like getting five people in a room to play five different songs at the same time and each song is shiat.* *Opinions may vary. If you found an incongruity between this statement and your opinion then your opinion is, at its core, wrong. |

If you found an incongruity between this statement and your opinion then your opinion is, at its core, wrong. That's why I always preferred big band, but Brubeck's quartet was always very coherent for a small jazz group. |

Louisiana_Sitar_Club: Jazz is terrible. It's like getting five people in a room to play five different songs at the same time and each song is shiat. Spoken like a man who's never played a note in his life. But here's a hint: most ensemble "jazz" is scored, it's not nearly as improvised as you think Even Dixieland, which is highly improvisational, has some pretty strict rules about who does what and when. |

Tax Boy: Dave Brubeck didn't write Take Five. [media.tumblr.com image 352x240] Welll, what do you know. I just checked out wikipedia: Take Five" is a jazz piece written by Paul Desmond and performed by The Dave Brubeck Quartet on their 1959 album Time Out... Upon his death in 1977, Desmond left the rights to royalties for performances and compositions, including "Take Five", to the American Red Cross, which has since received combined royalties of approximately $100,000 per year. That's kind of cool. At any rate, I saw Dave Brubeck about a year and a half ago, and he was still a pretty damned good performer at age 89. |

Ah Paul Desmond wrote Take Five. Dave Brubeck had some great bands, pushed the two-tone lineup early. Very refreshing performances when they played anything. |

Mokmo: Link A nice little video from the Kennedy center honors on his birthday two years ago. I got to see him play about a month before that at Purdue. He may have been a little old/slow but the rest of his band had a ton of energy |
