| phlegmmo The number of biblical references betraying disgust towards women and the workings of their bodies is extraordinary, but it ought not to surprise us: it is, after all, a book cobbled together entirely by men living in a barbaric and ignorant period of history, during which societies were governed largely by violence, a technique with which men are infamously more familiar. The role of women in Bronze Age culture was to bear children and little else, and, though the Church likes to avoid the issue, there are numerous biblical commands and injunctions for women to be raped and treated like property. |

| hubiestubert In fairness, women bleed every month and do not die. They birth babies out of seemingly nowhere. Women are frippin' magic, and that is witchcraft, and that is enough to scare the stuffing out of guys who just want to extract money from your pockets. Why do you think they burned Joan de Arc? |
||
| propasaurus Religion can only promise life in an unseen afterlife. Women give life in the here & now. |
||
| Barfmaker Who isn't? |
||
| Kazan what TFA said (quoted by phlegmmo) + bronze aged men were really worried that all the women would go fark the rich guy. |
||
| cman Religious dogma mirrors many of what our ancestors felt was the perfect order. Therefore, straying from such perfection is seen as a possible danger to the social structure of the community. It is about fear, really; fear of leaving traditions in the name of progress could infuriate their god as the dogma was written during a time of different tolerance. |

hubiestubert: In fairness, women bleed every month and do not die. This is true. Vaginas are like a portal to hell that both scare the shiat out of men......and then totally entice them at the same time. |

| Elandriel Because women think with their brains and not dicks and as such are prone to occasionally challenge assertions of mystery sky wizards. |

Now we can get back to talking about the merits of sammiches and Klondike bars. And how AWESOME bewbs are... |

Burger, fries, and a shake. /gold star to whoever gets the reference. Also fear by those who have the most to lose from progress; i.e. men and priests. |

Because vaginas. |

All I got from TFA is that they don't want them to speak at their meetings. Maybe they can only get the room for an hour. |

Because women are less prone to spewing vile bullshiat and therefore have no place in religion? |

Gay men who try and hide behind a life of pretend abstinence and funny hats are afraid of women? I am surprised. |
||
| Haliburton Cummings Why are religions afraid of everything?!? ftfy... just take a long hard look at most religious folks for a sec and you notice a lot of nutjob tendencies... being afraid of everything has the advantage of making them malleable and easy to control... which...is the whole point.. stupid superstitions for stupid people... take Americuh for example... "you might have dandruff!!!" "BIN LADEN!!!" " FOOD TAMPERING!!!" of course it's never "OUR FACTORY IS KILLING ALL THE FISH IN THE RIVER!!!" sheeplez.... |

I've never understood why there aren't more atheist women. Is there a major religion out there that doesn't treat them like absolute shiat? |

That's interesting and all, but wrong. At the time of it's inception, Christianity said to treat women and men as equals in a society (the Roman Empire) where women were treated like crap. |

Subby Why ![]() /FTFY //and answered it :) |
||
| Marcus Aurelius Current world religions are paternalistic. Matriarchal societies allow for powerful women, but usually don't tend to develop iron, steel, steam engines, or automatic weapons. |
||
| DontMakeMeComeBackThere
Religions are run by men, who have normal sexual ures in regards to women, but think those feelins are wrong, so they try to control the percieved source of those feelings. That simple. Control, not fear. Saying it's fear is just a way to feel superior, as the victim. It is far better to be feared than belittled. |

| ThatBillmanGuy
Yet every woman I know on Facebook (sigh.. My wife included) still vehemently believes in a magic sky fairy, and posts a "thank you" to it for everything from good weather to extra money... Daily. As an atheist, I always want to post something like "Seriously? God saw fit to grant you a good parking space, but decided that kids in Burma still need to get murdered in a civil war?" |

The article is written by someone who has only an outsider's view of the scripture. Not that he is wrong, but that he does not make it clear that it is more of a cultural and dogma based problem. He also could have pointed out that all the major religions have this problem (not sure about Buddhism). He also did not make it clear that it is men who wrote the scriptures. A couple of his quotes were letters written by and for men. He also used the most simple interpretation and mentioned nothing about symbolism. Women are treated badly because of severe flaws in culture where the men use religion as an excuse. |

Because religions are family building structures? And there are plenty of women that totally get off on being dominated. So, if you look at the wonderful success rate of world religions, there has to be something right about it. |
||
| theorellior It probably comes down to the insecurity of patrimony. A woman knows, prima facie, that the child is genetically half hers. The man in the equation can only hope that she wasn't sneaking some strange on the side, and that later the child will show enough of a resemblance that the point is moot. However, in low-population societies, everyone in the community was similar-enough looking that the range of possible fathers could be rather large. What to do? The solution: secure the pussy. Make sure, by hook or by crook, that no other penis can come near. That the deck is stacked against the woman should she attempt to lead an independent life. That women are looked down upon as evil and wanton should they stray from their Chosen Man. Violence and coercion is not out of the question. Neither is propaganda nor brainwashing. And what combines violence, coercion, propaganda and brainwashing in one neat, nice, tidy package? Organized, hierarchical religion. |
