| wizden People are as retarded about genetics as they are about vaccines apparently. |

I think I'm missing something here. FTFA: The idea is that they will mate with wild females and their children will die before reproducing. After a few generations, Key West's Aedes aegypti population would die off, reducing the dengue fever risk without using pesticides and at relatively a low cost, the proponents say. There is no vaccine for dengue fever. If the offspring die before reproducing, how can there be "a few generations"? Isn't "producing infertile offspring" about as big an evolutionary disadvantage as you can get? Someone enlighten me, please. I'm sure I'm wrong, and I'd like to know how. |

| MurphyMurphy orbister: Someone enlighten me, please. I'm sure I'm wrong, and I'd like to know how. Definitely poorly written. What they may be trying to say is that the altered males will continue with their spiking of the gene pool with future female mates that were progeny of unaltered males? Personally I think it's time to nip this entire mosquito thing in the bud. Forced genetic extinction of the entire species. Jesus, for all the species we're likely responsible for killing, at least this time we'd be doing it intentionally and purposefully. KILL EM ALL! |

That was originally all the problem with all of the spiked genetics methods. So let me layout the scheme. Males don't bite. Only females. Geneticists insert gene into males that causes winglessness in females (When they have it). Spiked male mates with normal female. Makes babies. All the female babies die because they have no wings. All male babies are now spiked. New generation of spiked males fark more normal females, producing more spiked males, but no functional females. The best part of this scheme is that the number of spiked males increases as the number of normal females falls. |

Alaskan mosquitoes killed Alaskan birds starve, stop crapping plants and lichens stop growing Caribou starve Wolves starve Alaskans turn to seafood |
