nearly tripling the amount of tarps in its stockpile from a pre-storm total of 17,000 to the current stock of 65,000

Math. How does it work?

Forklifts playing on ice? That is incredibly stupid and dangerous I have seen a video at my significant others' work where just 1 person doing something stupid on a forklift nearly decapitated another co-worker. They both laughed about it.

Isaac knocked out power to 903,000 customers, she said, but most of the state regained power in three to four days, meaning the need for ice was drastically reduced and shipped-in ice was left unused. She has said the state makes no apology for being over-prepared.

I guess I can't muster any outrage here. It looks like the state was actually prepared for a long power outage. Sometimes when you prepare for a disaster, things don't get used and money gets wasted. "They let the ice MELT?" Dear God, why didn't they just box it up and send it back to the manufacturer? This is an outrage!

Sorry, you're not allowed to be rational and realistic. You have to be outraged by everything and by people's inability to predict the future. Remember, everyone who doesn't predict the future accurately is an idiot - it's not because the future is inherently unknowable; it's because they're retarded.

It's precisely the reason I win every single lottery I enter; just pick the right numbers, stupid people.

Also, homie's suing SIX YEARS LATER? Or did he get fired like five years after the incident and is blaming that incident?

Ice has got to be one of the few things that would cost more to store or return than it would to just dispose of it and buy again when you need it.

The back story here is that the state was still buying ice even days after the "emergency" was over and there was no more need for it. They tried to hide that fact, lied to the local media about it, have refused to hand over public documents (that are required to be provided via the Freedom of Information Act for something like 5 yrs now), and if I recall correctly - the owner of the ice company is very well politically connected.

Here's the deal, someone in the state used the hurricane as a cover to "over buy", thus basically "embezzling" money from the State and Federal coffers to transfer a couple of million $'s to some political crony. Who knows if Pelican Ice even delivered the contracted amount of ice in the first place? It would be highly doubtful given that much of claimed deliveries happened AFTER the demand for the ice no longer existed. A nearly perfect scam in that basically ALL evidence was simply allowed to melt away.

Let me put this another way - It's Louisiana (having lived there) practically everything that goes on in that state is tied to scams and corruption at some level.

She has said the state makes no apology for being over-prepared.

Fair enough.
Sometimes individuals are over whelmed at the needs of a large mass of people. this is how you can make .17¢ on an item and still become a millionaire. (As an aside, not many items return only .17¢ to be sure)

I'd hate to see this fine fellow at a SeaBees base and looking at the row after row of Draglines for example or in Dumbfarkistan and the fields of F250's

It really staggers the mind at the sheer volume of stuff required when providing for a city and locale.
Me thinks he failed to bring his concerns to the attention of his supervisor first.
In other news, who would sue for their job that they'd been fired out of? First day back on the job, always a winner - perhaps he just wants the cash instead . . .

He would be shocked by how skilled seabees are at stealing things! It is part of their institutional lore. During one battle in Korea, Seabees went ashore under fire, and stole a steam locomotive from behind enemy lines... while under fire.

I'd have to look, but I seem to remember that suing under federal whistleblower protection gets you something like treble damages. So, whatever time he's off work until the suit is resolved in his favor = triple pay for that time. Plus other possible damages, if he lost his health insurance or something. I'm not certain of that, though.

At home it was referred to as Cumshaw as in "I've got a bit of cumshaw in my bag, courtesy of the dock workers" or "Couldn't you get some of that lumber cumshaw to finish out the framing?"
The original meaning was a small gratuity. By the time it made it to my local it was outrageous theft or stolen goods, goods / preferably swag, purloined for a better purpose.
Not sure about the USN but it was in the Merchants.

Reading, how does it work? I know it hard to imagine, but there have been other hurricanes to hit Louisiana pretty hard recently aside from Katrina. Hell the same year of Katrina there was Rita that basically did the same thing on the west side of the state. A Gustav repeat was what was feared with Isaac, but thankfully it didn't pan out that way.

As for the 'wasted' ice, I'm not sure what they could have done. I'm sure it partially melted while waiting the the trucks, so it not like it can be restored and used again like an MRE or crappy blue tarps. I just can't get too worked up over this.

As for the workers cutting up on lifts in the ice house, you should see what they do at a battery recycling plant that has acid and other nice slippery crap on the ground. At least the ice house lifts will last.
