The Stealth Hippopotamus: Or some kids where having some fun with rockets. Lord know we did. I'm guessing an remote-controlled device with a camera that was attempting surveillance of the women's showers. Porky's 2012, if you will. |

What? A hoax on a college campus? I fail to see how this is possible. |

Drones mostly come out at night. Mostly. |

That's UCSD, a major university of 30,000 students and a billion dollar yearly research funding. It's a a little better than a simple college. /UCSD alumni |

Well on a side note, the library in the background is slowly sinking into the ground because the designers failed to factor in the weight of the books into the plans... /it's true //it's on the 'net |

You should always wear a gas mask when looking at a downed drone. ALWAYS. |

To be fair, drones are also used in various civilian applications, mostly for aerial surveys, because the "cheaper than hiring an actual pilot" principle still applies. I'd also be somewhat disappointed if it hasn't occurred to anyone to use them for things like crop dusting yet. There's nothing really inherently sinister about them any more than any other aircraft, most of them are supersized versions of those radio-controlled foam things you used to hate getting as christmas presents because they'd break in 15 minutes when you sucked at driving them. Except that they're actually useful. So... realistically it's believable and not terribly worrisome that one might crash in the UCSB area. I'm not sure what the art project's farking point is supposed to be or why this is supposed to be shocking. Are they going to terrify us with red-light cameras sinisterly taking pictures without human input next? Maybe reveal the dark and horrible world of pressure plates automatically alerting the dude in the McDonalds that you're at the drive-through window? Unearth the deadly secret that some men exploit the deadly "fire" phenomenon with which man should not meddle simply to ward off hypothermia? HELP HOW DID THIS POST GET HERE I AM BAD AT TECHNOLOGY HOW LANGUAGE WORK NEW THING BAD. //USSD art students fr a permanent GOP majority, I guess? |

sidgates: General Atomics is about three miles from UCSD. Not even that far, there's a small research reactor almost literally across the street from the north end of campus. (Across the street, then part of the GA campus, so maybe 800 yards away?) CSB: I've seen that reactor spike and scram, in person. (They do it to impress the HS kids touring the facility) That said: This story is relatively minor on the scale of "Art Projects slash Hoaxes" that have managed to seriously piss off people on the UCSD campus. The guy who posed a perfectly-constructed construction project sign (mimicking the style of signs all over campus that showed an artist's rendering of some new research building under contstruction, etc.) of the "Giant Glass Pyramid" that was going to be constructed over the Sungod statue managed to REALLY upset people. It made some of the local talk-radio News stations before word got out that it was a hoax. |

I usually played Spartans or the University. Target number 1 was the fundie biatch, Godwin. Target 2 was the peace-loving hippie, Pravrin Lowell. That game had a lot of great quotes from the faction personalities. |

I think most of the drone stuff is over in Poway anyway. Since we're in the flight path from Miramar an F18 into our building is the biggest (non-earthquake/fire/zombie) threat we worry about. /Wish GA would let us use Tower Road to get to the train stop but oh well. |
