Retailers are past stocking up on Christmas items at this point and most of the goods due to become a Christmas gift are past that point in the supply chain. Yep, I remember we had to wait for a now shipment of stuff one year because a freighter from China went down in a typhoon in like July. Now it's all valentines and Easter crap or maybe even 4th of July and summer accessories.

Making a rough (approximate) count of the containers above deck I come up with 6*17*28 = 2856.
I don't think there is room for 13,144 containers below deck....

Intermodal containers come in different sizes. They tend to load the big ones on the outside because physics. The littlest ones I know of each take up 1/7 of a big one. Pretty sure # of containers is based on the little ones, not the big ones.

Thanks, that makes sense, but now I am disturbed by the possibility the figure of 16,000 containers may be on the low end.

After I posted I was thinking my number was close enough to 3000 and supposed if an equal amount could fit below the number would be 6000 which is close enough to 16,000 to be explained by a typo somewhere along the line.

However (and yes, I have waaaay too much time on my hands), assuming the visible containers are the largest, seven times as many would be 21,000 (using 3000 as the above deck figure). Obviously this is well over the 16,000 mentioned in TFA and doesn't even include anything below deck. If the capacity is presumed equal there (entirely without evidence), the capacity would be 42,000, even if that number was never reached due to the presence of at least some larger containers.

Hmmm, now if I could just work in some figures about the airspeed velocity laden vs. unladen European or African swallows....
