There could be two sides. Maybe the guy he stabbed with the broken beer bottle drugged and sodomized him back in their school days. Maybe the cops had him in interrogation all night without letting him go to the toilet and this was his way of protesting his treatment.

I used to work as a maintenance electrician in a large, multibay aircraft hanger. One night the other maintenance guys got a call about a bad smell in one of the restrooms. They thought that a toilet got clogged or something. They get there and in one of the stalls someone smeared their feces all over the walls of the stall. Bewildered, they reported it to the mechanics' boss and cleaned it up. They learned the next day that down the hall someone wrote a message in feces on the door of one of the bosses. To this day the bosses wont say what was written on the door.

His parents must be so proud of him. But then I guess love knows no bounds. I have some cousins who have been in and out of jail and have done some really horrible stuff, and I was surprised to find out over Thanksgiving that those cousins are still living at their parents.
