I told my pal I wouldn't visit NYC with a large postion of the population having herpes. Most of them get it from being young, and drinking, engaging in promiscious activities. Yeah, that would be everyone in the food service sector. Not taking my chances. |

Forget about the large sodas Yeah subby. You should take your own advice. It's an article about STDs. Your butt hurts so much about NYC banning large sodas, you just HAD to throw that in, didn't you? |
||
| Jakamo Didn't Lindsay and Dina Lohan relocate to New York? They should be careful so as not to get sick. |
||
| justanotherfarkinfarker
Holy shiat. Well it's basic statistics. They have a large poor black population, and the gheys. Most people get Hep C from drug use though, regardless of it being listed here as an STD stat. Same goes for HIV if you are straight. Hep B you can vax, so NYC needs to get on that. |

I'm getting a kick out of this thread since I just signed up to the Diseased Tour of the Five Boroughs. I though it would just be a quick trip to the Leper Colony on Roosevelt Island and then lunch in Central Park. |

How do STDs have anything to do with a local Govt attempting to stop the poisoning of its people by multinational corporations? |
||

33% of the zip codes were in the top 20% of the zip codes? |

"Among the most severe examples is ZIP code 10474 in Hunts Point, the Bronx, where rates of hepatitis C, chlamydia, gonorrhea and HIV/AIDS all ranked in the top 20 percent of all New York City ZIP codes." Wait, so you're saying that the place that puts the "Point" in HBO's "Hookers at the Point" has high rates of STDs? |

Insatiable Jesus: How do STDs have anything to do with a local Govt attempting to stop the poisoning of its people by multinational corporations? I would assume that it has something to do with the priorities of the NYC Board of Health, which was traditionally concerned with actual diseases (as well as sanitation) before Bloomberg decided that Coke and Pepsi (and trans fats, and salt) were the real enemies. |

On the topic of pop, not that I am a big consumer anymore, I've switched to the Hecho en Mexico variants, which feature sucrose rather than fructose, and I seem to be a lot healthier. This was an experiment, I never bought the arguments of the glucose hatas, but speaking empirically and anecdotaly, I feel way better, I've lost weight, and am experiencing a much better time on the crapper. |

Why don't you red states keep sucking down those 32oz Coca Cola products and we will see how you compare to NYC in 20 years. Hint, you're gonna need a bigger Hoverround. |

Health is improving in NYC. There are a lot more people having to run long distances to chase after their stolen I-Phones and tablets. |

Insatiable Jesus: How do STDs have anything to do with a local Govt attempting to stop the poisoning of its people by multinational corporations? It's soda (or pop). It's hardly poison. Plus, the people could, you know, just not buy them? |

I almost forgot.... health is improving also because stabbings are down this year. |
||
| freewill Insatiable Jesus: How in the King Fark is the NYC Board of Health supposed to stop people from farking? Generally, these problems tend to center around populations with limited understanding of the value and necessity of condom use. Public awareness of STDs and fear of AIDS has dwindled over the years and people are casually farking bareback again. So, edumacation would be a good place to start. |

Dear people of New York (and submitter?), It's not the government's fault you got herpghonnesyphilitis. Quit sticking your unprotected junk in people you just met. Use condoms - you have to buy those on your own, too. We're not going to provide them for you. They're really not that expensive. |

Cybernetic: the NYC Board of Health, which was traditionally concerned with actual diseases (as well as sanitation) before Bloomberg decided that Coke and Pepsi (and trans fats, and salt) were the real enemies. I don't think it should be assumed just because the Board is now involved in diet-oriented health initiatives that they are any less concerned with other aspects of public health than before. Calorie counts and soda caps make good fodder for the perpetually outraged modern media, so they get disproportionate coverage. |

And hell, STDs are skyrocketing where I live, an affluent suburban Atlanta area as all of the middle aged women act out the latest episode of Sex and the City. And this is Jesus GOP Land. |

Hoboclown: Good idea, subby. I'm sure the mayor of New York telling people how and when to have sex will go over just great. Nice strawman. Would be a shame if something. were. to. happen. to. it. Providing education, condoms, and maybe even syringes would greatly help. No intrusions necessary. |

WhoopAssWayne: Ah yes, America's liberal utopia. Bullshiat. It's America's Sodom and Gomorrah, run by billionaires and managed for tourists. Also, it's way easier for Bloomberg to get behind something like a ban on large sodas (yes, Americans are fat, and yes, there are consuming shiatty food to death) because it's about modifying consumer behavior - moulding individual responsibility through regulating consumption. But the STD problem, he's not going to touch that with someone else's dick, because it's not just about personal responsibility, it's about structural violence, inequality, and poverty. Someone should get their shiat together and map this STD study on to poverty maps of NYC. My hypothesis is that you will find much higher rates of all of these infections in poorer areas. And nothing will be done about it, because rich and middle-class NYC needs the poor and marginalized NYC to survive. If the poor were actually being paid a living wage, life would cost too much for the more affluent New Yorkers to continue to live there. And then they'd all move out to Connecticut and Jersey, and then the lovely little tourist paradise of gentrification and M and M stores would collapse into the cesspool of crime and violence it was in the 1980s. Actually, now that I think of it, ignoring the STD problem is just the other side of the regulating soda consumption proposal. There's no thought to why people are buying up huge sodas for low prices... just that the solution is to take away the sodas. How about instead of taking away the sodas, we look at why people consume shiatty, cheap food in the first place. It's because they're farking poor and have few other options. The same reason they fark like rabbits without protection. |

The study said 33 percent of all the ZIP codes in New York City were in the top quintile citywide for multiple sexually-transmitted diseases during a survey taken in 2010. I obviously don't understand English very wekk ... so 33% of all the citywide zip codes were in the top 20% of citywide multiple STDs. What is this saying? |

[godspeaksilisten.files.wordpress.com image 413x427] I read this to mean that each of the 33% was in the top quintile for multiple diseases, not necessarily the same diseases. So one zip code may be in the top for AIDS, herpes, and syphilis, while another in the top for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and genital warts. Both contribute to the 33%, but neither are in the top 20% for the same diseases. |
