| The University of California, one of the nation's most prestigious colleges, has redesigned its logo to look like something you'd click to "like" a news story on your favorite social networking site. Oddly, some people have a problem with that |

... WTF? That's supposed to be a logo for a university system? |
||
| BKITU But several say UC should just stand its ground, and allow some time for the initial shock to wear off. In other words... they'll get over it? |

| WorldCitizen Wow. The bad thing is you know some "committee" and "team" spent hundreds of hours "researching" and "creating" this new logo that is 100% fail. Public universities are not corporations, and that is a very good thing. Stop trying to convert them them into just that. |
||
| Thoguh WorldCitizen: Public universities are not corporations, and that is a very good thing. Stop trying to convert them them into just that. Public entities acting increasingly like businesses is a very real and terrible trend. |

Public entities acting increasingly like businesses is a very real and terrible trend. In a 100 years when somebody asks "The US used to be the leader in technology and innovation, WTH happened?" The answer will be that Bell Labs disappeared in the 1970's thus ending any corporate commitment to "pure" research, and in the 2000's Universities started pressuring their professors to "monetize" their reserch labs (ie focus only on projects that have obvious, immediate practical applications that can be patented by the university). WHich left only DARPA, and the one day some senator who firmly believed that he had a bone hanging on his office wll that came from the Dinosaur Jesus rode strated asking why the DOD was "wasting" so much money on weird and frivolous research... |

Its not the official logo. They're still using the "old logo" for diplomas etc. but the "new logo" is just going to be on marketing stuff. Whats the big deal? Oh, right -- the internet. |

WorldCitizen: Public universities are not corporations, and that is a very good thing. Stop trying to convert them them into just that. If private sources are providing much of the funding, what the hell do you expect to happen? State funding is down by almost 60% since the 90's. www.salon.com/2012/12/11/new_uc_logo_ a_sad_sign_for_higher_education/ s ingleton/ |

Goddamn, that's hideous. And while I understand the need to refresh your branding periodically, when it comes to a university I like the old-school traditional seal. It says "established, respectable institute" vs this new thing, which looks like something you'd get from an online diploma mill. |

It's a realistic depiction of how the UC system is going to shiat (aside from a few select departments that hoard all the funds). They seriously need to eliminate a good half of their programs/majors but I guess too many people get butthurt when there's no ethnic studies or Charles Dickens intensive summer program. They're pretty much robbing students and giving them a false sense that pursuing a phd in a liberal art is a rewarding ambition. Meanwhile these programs get zero percent of state funding. Just downsize or eliminate them. They'll have more money to actually embellish the slightly too golden urine getting flushed down the stylized, wrong shade of blue toilet. |

MBooda: one ten of the nation's most prestigious colleges FTFY Sorry, but Irvine, Merced, and Riverside are not prestigious colleges. I'd even be hard pressed to call Davis, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, or the San Francisco campuses "prestigious." The UC system has two prestigious Universities: UC and UCLA |

I have troubles reading strikethroughs and actually striking through them in my head. |
