One is the customer donating from their personal funds (the store just acts as a proxy), the other is the corporation donating out of their profits.

I kind of liked the Lidl I frequented while on a business trip to Barcelona. I had to describe it to family as Sam's Club-quantities in a store with the footprint of a 7-11.

I used to work at a Lidl so I'm getting a kick.

What matters is that they are mostly in-kind donations. In-kind donations means food that is spoiled or about to spoil, in most cases. Food banks get tons of food past the best-before date, and the company then uses the in-kind donation receipt as a tax write-off. that is all a very effective system, but it is not the sort of donations that compare to this Twitter campaign.

I always round up and give a few extra dollars when they ask. Last week at Dick's s Sporting Goods they sked if you were interested in donating just $1.00 to Children's Hospital. I saw people buying $100's to $1,000's in junk and never saw one person say yes
