| Because People in power are Stupid Just to be sure: You have a prisoner in handcuffs and you need to shock them too. What it's missing is a synchronized external video recording system so that you can have hours of entertainment watching the electrocuted, handcuffed prisoners writhe around on the floor. |

minoridiot: Isn't there a law against cruel and unusual, or did we give that up under Bush, too? Yes, but if you do it to everyone, then it's cruel but usual, and that's just fine, according to Scalia. |

How about upgrading with a penis dongle (but i repeat myself) which can be attached for "enhanced" interrogation techniques? |

| edmo Let's move on to the universal collar with the same function. Then people can continue to live normally until some sort of precrime is noted, like looking at Wikileaks or something, then injects them so they'll sit quietly until he police arrive. /The machines deserve to inherit the planet. |

Theaetetus: minoridiot: Isn't there a law against cruel and unusual, or did we give that up under Bush, too? Yes, but if you do it to everyone, then it's cruel but usual, and that's just fine, according to Scalia. That seems screwed up to me. I think his ruling was wrong. The punishment does not have to be both cruel and unusual, the prohibition is against cruel punishments and unusual punishments. It's like saying: "I hate red and white grapes." It probably means that I hate both red grapes, and white grapes, not that I hate red-and-white grapes. |

I can see the shock part might be good if a prisoner gets ahold of a weapon, you can shock their hands numb. However, I don't think the drug injection is a good idea at all. Firstly, anesthesology is a tricky science. It should not be automated due to risk of overdosage or bad reactions. Secondly, if you knock somone out, you have to heave their dead weight around, better to make them reluctantly cooperative than unconscious. |

Slippery slope from that to collars with a "kill" button like those Somni 451 and the other Fabricants wore in Cloud Atlas. Sheriff Joe would love to have collars like those on his prisoners. |

Well, I could see something where if you get more then X number of feet from the police officer escorting you, you are knocked unconscious. Could be useful for prison transport and in courthouses to prevent escape attempts. Less likely alternative: Okay Cleetus, we will stand over here with guns trained on you, you WILL put on those restraints and you WILL get that flu shot. You were such a pain last year with the sniffling and moaning driving the whole cell block nuts. Yeah, big scary cannibal gangster crying for his mother is NOT how we want to spend this winter. |

This is a patent application, so the creators have to be as broad as possible in terms of potential applications. In practice, I think there would be too much liability in injecting any type of drug into someone outside of a medical setting, so I doubt that feature would be utilized. This seems like a useful tool if deployed in a sensible way. For instance, these handcuffs might be used in maximum security prisons with particularly dangerous offenders, as a safer means than traditional handcuffs in transporting those people. I hope that this will not simply be used to replace standard handcuffs in all settings, and I doubt that it will (due to issues of cost over traditional handcuffs, as well as potential liability with overzealous police.) |
||
| snocone Protecting and Serving For Your Own Good, like it or not. So the problem is that you cannot hire guards capable of handling a handcuffed prisoner, they need a remote control? And escalation of violence/punishment from a safe distance! Seems a touch more better to properly train the guard. But, on the way to a fully automated imprisonment of 30-40% of the population, I guess there are hardships. Fascist humans have dropped to this level before and it did not turn out well in the end. Methinks, in the end, the New Orderlies have grossly underestimated a thingie or two about humans and them learning the hard way that they are not really the Baddest MoFos in the world will be "fascinating". /you can herd some of the people some of the time, but you cannot herd all of the people all of the time, or cats |

While there's a certain SciFi quality to these that I can appreciate if you can't handle a prisoner after getting cuffs on them the either A: you're grossly negligent during tense situations, or B: you simply suck and need to get a different job. I'd guess these are used to torture/punish far more than to restrain. |

Jeez, it looks like one of the short stories from Walter Mosley's "Futureland," where prisons are run by corporate technocrats and utilized to opress minorities, is becoming more and more true every day, i.e. the "snake" which was a device placed on a prisoner and it "disciplined" prisoners as needed. |
