| Life's been hard on John "Crazy Card" McAfee lately -- leaving your $20M fortune behind in Belize is one thing, but forfeiting your 20- and 17-year-old girlfriends? Now that's harsh |

As someone that has actually been to Belize I can tell you he might not be crazy to fear for his life, if he pissed off some government officials... its one of the most corrupt countries in the world... If you have money you can literally get away with murder (and a lot worst...) /getting a kick //girls are hot, but too much aids risk imho |

How does a guy who founds a company as big as McAfee only end up with $20 million? |
||
| doczoidberg
I feel kind of sorry for him. The dude had it made -- 20 million bucks...a 17 year old girlfriend??? Now it's gone, all gone. Hell, I've utterly thrown away my life in the last six months, but my losses pale in comparison to his. ...Actually, now that I think about it, McAfee's story is making me want to kill myself just a little bit less.... |

mod3072: How does a guy who founds a company as big as McAfee only end up with $20 million? A few reasons, 1. He sold out fairly early with most of the McAfee stuff in the 1995 time frame. He got a nice payday but it wasn't Billions or even in the hundred million range probably more like 30-45 million though with his personal fortune from various compensation he was in the 60 to 70 mill in total worth as well as making some nice cash from early instant messenger licenses and patents. Also for the longest after he left McAfee wasn't the company name it was Network associates 2. He lived extravagantly, and didn't always make the soundest of investments. 3. He actually tends to relatively regularly found and spin other venture companies. 4. He got hit and hit hard by both the 2000 and 2008 financial crunches. 5. He had alot / most of his remaining personal assests tied up in quorum the biomed he was playing with in Belize. 6. He has spent a ton in various legal things over the past decade or so. 7. I'd actually call 20 million generous at the moment if he had to raise cash and you gave him a 3 month window I'd be surprised to see more than 3 to 5 come out of that and afterward he wouldn't be holding anything. Right now there are a bunch of assets that are in his name that aren't leveraged that he doesn't have real control over, he's going to be comfortable, but either his lifestyle for the next couple of years tames way down, or he's going to end up broke in a nursing home. |

For the money and land I'm guessing that will go to the gov and some to the estate of the guy that is dead after they sue him. The girls with go with the next rich white guy. |

I don't feel sorry for him about anything. He's not an idiot, he has or had tons of money, and he's lived his life just as he wanted to do. Tough shiat if he screwed it all up. He's not a child or a young guy sowing some wild oats--he wanted to do things just the way he did them. Also he's a media whore and I can't stand people like that. |

Without the $20M he wouldn't have had the girlfriends long. |

So, apparently, the age of consent in Belize is 17, or possibly lower. |

Is the 20 mill all of his money or only what he had in Belize. If I had that king of money it would never get near any 3rd world corrupt country. Just put it in a bunch of international banks. |
||
| St_Francis_P Cybernetic: So, apparently, the age of consent in Belize is 17, or possibly lower. It's a sliding scale depending on how much money you have. |
||
| TheGreatGazoo Back in the day I used to go to ftp.mcafee.com and the antivirus software was free for home use. Seemed to run fine and if it found something it would pop up a little tsr message and tell you it saved the day. |

There is corruption but they are way way down the list of most corrupt countries. He's much more likely to be killed by the crooks he associated with than the mostly apathetic police. |

mod3072: How does a guy who founds a company as big as McAfee only end up with $20 million? Who knows. The weed growers in my part bring in much, much more than that and they don't write software at all. Hell some of them can barely count their toes and get the same number twice, but they're getting paid. |

He may have left a lot of money behind but he has a fortune ahead of him - book and movie deals alone are going to fetch him quite a tidy sum. |

| theflatline The USA has extratorial laws, when you are out of the country you need to diddle 18 and over. Anything under 18 you get rumbled for jailbait when you get home. It does not matter what the local age of consent is. |
