When I got popped for a ticket I ended up calling the company because I had one very simple question: why do I only have one ticket when I should have 364 other tickets because I, and everyone else on this particular stretch of road, knows that you have to do +15/20 over the posted limit of 50 to make it through one particular intersection in order to make the rest of the 5 intersections at the posted limit. The man explained to me that the camera actually clocks every single car that goes through the intersection, a police officer reviews them, and then chooses who to give tickets to. trivial use of my dark powers: Can we stop pretending these cameras are for "safety" now? | IronJelly Marcus Aurelius: $afety fir$t. Back home in Vegas, police were told a few years ago to "find a reason" to ticket anyone they stop, since it's revenue for the city. It seems that while some policemen are honest, a whole lot of people use law enforcement as a way to legally bully people. Who knew? |

While I think speed cameras leave a lot to be desired, you really don't get to complain that you got a ticket when you're doing 15 to 20 miles over the posted limit. |

beantowndog: Sounds like the photos needed some circles and arrows. And a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one was. |

| downstairs Ok, certainly seems like a BS ticket... and maybe off-topic a bit here... but in part of the video (unless I'm seeing it wrong) it seems like the car has a green light? Anyone else see that? |

In the photo, the car clearly is parked beyond the white stop line - which is technically a failure to stop. |

Godscrack: [www.newlaunches.com image 450x474] Plate flipper + pull down your sun visor. Difficulty: You have to remember to when to do it First pic looks like Pennsylvania YJL-7892 - a truck plate. We don't have speed cameras here in Pennsylvania - only a few red light cameras in Philadelphia. While I abhor the idea of automated enforcement in lieu of appropriate driver education and reasonable limits, having a plate flipper is likely only going to invite additional scrutiny and fines if the police manage to figure out what the plate says. (I know, cover the back of the plate too...) |

I feel your pain. There is a camera in an underpass in DC that I used to drive by a lot (until 4 warnings and 2 tickets later I realized I just wasn't ever going to remember it was there and changed my drive to work). The posted speed limit is about 10 miles an hour lower than it even makes sense to go. There is a light at the top of the ramp...you can coast naturally up the ramp and slow to a stop or you can go 25 until you bottom out in the underpass and crawl to a near stop due to momentum, then have to awkwardly accelerate up the ramp then jam on the breaks at the light at the top. It SUCKS. I've never, in seven years of driving this route to work, seen an accident there. But no...it needs an unnaturally slow speed limit and a camera...and tickets that are $100-$150 a pop, apparently. Grr... /Some city council members are actually raising the speed limits by some of our cameras because they're so ridiculous...so it isn't just me. |

Elzar: In the photo, the car clearly is parked beyond the white stop line - which is technically a failure to stop. [theinfosphere.org image 225x169] ?? He got a speeding ticket, not a red light ticket. In the photo I saw, he's several inches behind the line. On another note, the genius behind speeding camera tickets is that even when they get it wrong, they still get paid. I'm sure this guy will be charged court fees when he fights the ticket. |

hasty ambush: trivial use of my dark powers: Can we stop pretending these cameras are for "safety" now? Shut up and pay your fine taxes. It's the patriotic thing to do. If you don't like government, roads and schools you can always move to Somalia. If taxes were at a responsible level, cities wouldn't have to rely on tickets for revenue. But hey, TAXES BAD |

| A Shambling Mound I just watched a minivan run two lights in a row and those lights happen to be the only two photo-enforced lights in my zip code. So I'm getting a kick out of this. Also: thismomentinblackhistory: fark those cameras. You don't ever HAVE to do 15/20 over a posted limit. Ever. Period. |

Huh? I think he means that the lights are timed so that he could travel through all of them without stopping if it were not for one in the middle that prevents this. So, for example, if light #7 out of 10 was in synch with the rest, he could drive through all 10 lights without stopping. However, if light #7 is out of synch, he can get through lights 1-6, and has to wait at light 7. Which means that it throws the timing off with the rest of the lights and he has to also wait at 8, 9, and 10. It's inefficient to have a green light with no traffic going through it, so he goes twice as fast approaching light #7, so he can also go through lights 8, 9, and 10. There is a string of lights like that on my commute to work. If you hit the lights right, every light is green except Commerce street. If you get caught at Commerce street, you can see all the lights ahead of Commerce street green, but empty because everyone is stopped at Commerce. |

| Treygreen13 occamswrist: That's all it takes for some people to justify excessive speeding. I'm just offering an explanation of what he said. I don't speed to get through Commerce since I'm in a downtown area and there's a good chance going 20 over would inevitably end with some moron wandering across the street at a "Don't Walk" sign without looking and I'd splatter him all the way to Main. Because people do that here. Just wander into the street. All the damn time. Ugh. That being said, some places speeding isn't a bad thing and the police are benefiting from artificially low speed limits. There is a stretch of road near me that is 6-lanes wide straight as an arrow through a vast field of nothing. Just farms on either side. Speed limit is 30. It's ludicrous. They put cops all over it and rack up huge speeding tickets for going more than 5 over. |
