MFAWG: 6.3 is getting up there. Everybody OK? I live in Long Beach about 40 mi away. Didn't feel a thing, but woke up around that time. Didn't hear any car alarms going off. Since the earthquake was on the side of Catalina facing away from the mainland, maybe the shockwaves bounced off in that direction(?) /kudos for caring, MFAWG |

utah dude: grammar: 88 miles SW of Avalon, Calif., on Santa Catalina Island. catalina is less than 88 miles long. calif hasn't been used as an abbrev for CA for 25 years. The quake was beneath the ocean floor (which -- along with the fact that it struck around 2 AM -- is why most didn't notice it). I still use the "Calif." abbreviation ...and nobody can make me stop. |

Woke me up...started to question if I should get up or not, decided not to. This felt like a minor bump compared to the Easter quake a few years ago. /Just East of San Diego |

AP (Associated Press) Stylebook says Calif. is okay. http://www.inkhouse.net/twelve-common -mistakes-of-ap-style/ "State abbreviations. AP doesn't follow standard ZIP code abbreviations - e.g., MA for Massachusetts. Each state has its own abbreviation - e.g., Mass. for Massachusetts; N.Y. for New York; Calif. for California; Fla. for Florida and so on. However, eight states - Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, Texas and Utah - aren't abbreviated in datelines or text. Omit state abbreviations in datelines for well-known U.S. cities such as Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco, etc." |
