In 2010 - the latest year for which detailed statistics are available - there were 12,996 murders in the US. Of those, 8,775 were caused by firearms. I wonder how many of those that weren't in numbers that the news cares about are interesting to the general public. It is horrific that 27 died today. But thousands have died this year. I'm sure at least 20 children were among them. Why is it worse when they all die at the same time, than when they die every day? |

I think their explanation was reasonable. The "promotion" tag was the twitter party they were hosting and it was them telling people the party was over and that something bad had happened. Might look bad, but seems legit. |
||
| you are a puppet
From what i know about twitter their explanation seems pretty reasonable. |

Social media overreacts to EVERYTHING in the face of terrible tragedy?! YOU DON'T SAY!! Kmart's explanation is totally fine and this headline is farking ridiculous. Next stop on the witch hunt, *shakes dice* video games again! |

As I scrolled down the article that called out Kmart for being heartless with their tweet, a "pop-up" emerged from the bottom right side of the screen that said "RECOMMENDED FOR YOU: Mass Shooting Suspect Adam Lanza Was A 'Developmentally Disabled' 20-Year-Old" idontwanttoliveonthisplanetanymore.jp g |

Strange. I'm giving Mass Effect 2 another playthrough now and I don't have any urges to kill my son or go on a murder rampage? Is there something wrong wth me? |

It was absolutely not used for any promotional reasons, but simply to ensure the participants of the Twitter party were able to see our message of sympathy." I can see why the tweet could have been misinterpreted as advertising. But this explanation makes sense, and I for one take them at their word. Does anybody really believe that even the most tone-deaf PR professionals would attempt to cash in on the murder of 20 children? Let's reserve our outrage for the people that actually deserve it. /looking at you, Mike Huckabee |

The best we can hope is that the media don't glorify this asshole by making him the most important part of the story. Who am I kidding, I'm sure they'll be posting his image all over their front pages and spending hours talking about his motives. Charlie Brooker explains why the media shouldn't fetishize the murderers and FFS he is right. Focus on the victims, not on the bastard that killed them. |

As long as the media keeps glorifying these assholes that kill lots of people, they will keep killing. I'm sure this guy's face will be all over the media in a matter of hours, if it isn't already. If you are unhappy with your life and you want everyone to know about it, what better way than to murder lots of people, and be famous for a few days. I think the media has to take responsibility and not give these guys their 15 minutes of fame. But they can't tear themselves away. It is the media that makes these people important. It's not enough to kill yourself, you have to kill scores of others, so that everyone knows how unhappy you were. And the more you kill, the more the media will talk about you. That is the reason mass murderers do it. They want to be famous. And the media will make them more famous for every dead body. The media needs to quit it's appetite for murder. |

Umm... Kmart sent us(Business Insider) this statement explaining what happened: "We wanted the participants in the Twitter party we had just halted to see our message of sympathy. The way you do that is by adding the hashtag for the Twitter party. It was absolutely not used for any promotional reasons, but simply to ensure the participants of the Twitter party were able to see our message of sympathy." Britney Spear's Speculum: Dear Submittard and Twitter, [i.imgur.com image 528x500] That is all Completely off-topic, but I always wondered who told the potato gal about the pics. Not to be too insensitive of a douche, but I had far less animosity towards whoever used her image in a silly joke than whoever decided her life was incomplete without knowing about it, Might be a terribly prejudiced belief but I somehow doubt she would have found it on her own. |

Why do they have to glamorize automobiles when people die on the road everyday? We need to start blaming the cars and keep this from ever happening again. |
