Great. More cat pictures.

Seriously, a nice find, submitter. Those are some pretty spectacular animals.

Cheetahs are definitely badass, even if they don't have a lot of stamina. Hell of a lot cooler than Fluffy, the house cat that ignores you except when she wants to claw your chest as you sleep.

Our zoo is fairly cool, and one of the neatest things they do is their "back scene" tours, one of which includes going on a "walk" with the cheetahs

I drive by there every day. And it's especially amusing since the speed limit on the tollway there? yep - 65mph. Cheetahs allowed, I suppose!

One of the best moments of my childhood was when they took selected students (lol, for some reason they thought I was smart) to a behind-the-scenes, overnight zoo trip. I got to hold an owl with the glove, get up close with the bigger cats, watch the polar bear take a dump so huge that I'm still traumatized by it to this day, and feed/pet the seals. Oh, and I got to sit on an elephant. I doubt they do any of this these days, because it was the late 80s - just before we started turning our children into sissies.

The seals were my favorite part. But don't be fooled...those little bastards will fark your day up if you give them the chance. Seriously, look at this one:

Would be cooler if they put a horse on the horse track for the cheetahs to chase.

I'm kinda surprised though. Sure it's fenced, but that fence wasn't designed to hold back farking cheetahs! There's a corner in the back of the pic in TFA that looks wide open.

In the video watch at 1:00 - the two cheetahs are barreling down on one of their handlers - who doesn't seem to flinch.

Damn.

I dunno, I had this one cat who would run up and down the stairs in the middle of the night until her feet were sometimes bleeding. When she was done, she'd be all bug eyed and full of static and smiling.

I've known a few dogs that would like that. One was an ex-racer Greyhound, the other is a Border Collie.

I know your cat. She stole all my coke one night in 1998. You'd best get me a refund before I have to come up there.

Our kids are getting 2 of these tours for Christmas - we haven't decided which ones yet, but there are options to be able to feed the animals, which I think will be awesome. I want the cheetah walk for myself :D

I read that and was afraid you read my LiveJournal from college. Or a police report. But I re-read and saw "had this...cat".

A dog track wouldn't do?

Speaking of dog racing, here's a thought:

Brighter Races: Replace dogs with cheetahs. Replace mechanical rabbit with mechanical antelope.

Is that a solution for the deer? A Cheetah on staff in order to keep the deer off the grounds.

There is a big problem with deer over population in some areas, I wonder if Cheetahs would be considered a 'green' solution.

Looks like only one of the cheetahs was into it. The other was like "meh, its only a stuffed duck".

I dunno. Mariko, Ryoko, Victoria, Astrud and Asterix are all pretty fast little BAs and have kept the house and grounds free of mice, rats, rabbits, squirrels, jays, small dogs and small children for 7 or so years. (Except Asterix, he's a foundling about 3 months old.) House cats can be pretty badass. The only difference between them and a big cat is a few hundred pounds and big cats don't purrr and little ones don't roar.

What did you do to Fluffy that caused her to behave in such a way?

I've heard that's been tried but you can't make a cheetah give a damn about running in a race. It just sat there.

You can if you "motivate" them like they do greyhounds (which is not a good thing).

In the summer the local greyhound group had a playgroup at a fenced in baseball diamond where we could take our dogs off leash and let them run around. It was always amazing to watch them run full bore. Those cheetahs weren't even trying. Love the breed but I would be even happier if we didn't have to rescue them.

They do. They just sound like a big diesel engine.

A friend of my parents had a 130 pound lapcat mountain lion. Its purr would vibrate your teeth out.

Part of me would actually like to bet on which horse the cheetahs attack. I think we could get together a win-win situation here with old race horses.

Well, I guess the old race horses lose, but you get what I'm saying.

I think that turf oval is inside the main track which is inside the surrounding stands and parking. There are several layers of fences and, frankly, the cats would probably become bored and go to sleep before they ever got that far.

Cincinnati Zoo and cheetah expert Catherine Hilker actually have a farm (more like a ranch) near here where they raise the cheetahs and exercise them. Cincinnati Zoo is known as the "sexiest" zoo, since they have such success breeding rare species. They are so successful that they had to develop contraceptives for the critters, or else wind up with more little ones than they wanted.
Looky here!

Our Public TV station did three series of educational shows about the Cinti Zoo; I worked on most of them. We actually had a cheetah and a mountain lion in the studios for an interview show. Yes, they do purr! And one of them undid - and ate - Catherine's shoelace during the interview! They are exceptional creatures.

Amazing. Biggest housecat I ever saw was a friend's Maine Coon. It was a large (25-30lbs) male, quite muscular and grumpy too. But eventually if he got to like you he'd purr. It was a bigger and louder version of a regular cat's purr IIRC.

Yep. We've got a 20 pound Maine Coon here. Big damn cat. He's not grumpy, though. Loves everyone, especially anyone who's got access to the food bucket.

22 pounds, barn cat, total asshole:

img694.imageshack.us

Got me to the doctor's office once because he connected his teeth under the skin and fat in my hand and made it swell up like a softball.

We keep him around because honestly, there's nothing quite like a 22 pound cat nestling down next to you in bed. You feel like you're privileged.  He's not fat, he's just that big. The vet doesn't like him, but she doesn't think he's been cross-breeded with anything. He's just an anomaly.
