You can no longer openly carry your rifle into a coffee shop in California, and the next illegal alien to run you over might have a legal driver's license. Happy 2013

This is what happens when you abuse a convenience and the largesse of society.  What was allowed as a nod to convenient transportation of rifles was used as an intimidation tactic and political statement, and so the privilege was revoked.  Nice job.

The new law applies to those given a work permit as part of an Obama administration program that suspends deportation for many people who arrived illegally as children."

How are you still illegal or undocumented if you have a work permit? Seems like that would move you into the documented category.

The same thing can be said for the giving of driver's licenses and financial aid to illegal aliens.

Just out of curiosity, have any of those coffee shops been robbed while people with unloaded rifles were hanging around?
Cause I'm failing to see the real urgency for a law there.

/and ditto on the illegal immigrants thing. Teenagers are more dangerous than licensed foreigners.

Why are they giving illegal aliens driving licenses and allowing them to qualify for state tuition? Why not work on either having them become legal residents or citizens, then you can, you know, tax them, and spend less money on deportation and processing. Or just deport them.

Are they going to deport illegals with driving licenses and those currently enrolled at a state school? If not, then doesn't that seem like a loophole, they're still illegal? If so, doesn't that seem like a waste of money to give them access to these resources, only to kick them out?

FTFA:   The courts have been enlisted in a dispute over a new law prohibiting the practice of "conversion therapy" on minors in an effort to change their sexual orientation from gay to straight. Judges have disagreed over its merits, but a federal appeals court has blocked the law from taking effect.

Hard to believe this didn't pass with that contentious mass of laws, it sounds positively Victorian.

Because people may have started to realize that this is not a problem that can be solved with "deport everyone" and has more grey areas like "illegal immigrant that was brought here as a child with no real understanding of what the implications are".

We might actually be approaching a real compromise to the problem, but not without one or two great derps to come out of it. And those derps shall be great and terrible.

Nah. We get this weird thing where we will usually (but not always) elect either a Republican governor and a Democratic state legislature or the other way 'round, so nothing really gets done. This means we voters say things like "What? A new law about being nice to chickens that will cost us elebentygazillion dollars in ten years? I'm so totally gonna vote for that, dudes!" and then the legislature gets nothing done, then the bonds for transportation projects have to be paid off, then the folks down in places like San Diego get their panties in a wad over taxes... you can see where that one is going. Add to that hot mess the fact we're a donor state - we pay more to the feds as a state than we get in things like federal highway funds, just so places like  Mississippi, which is considered a welfare state as they are poor bastids, can get their roads paved, and we're pretty much screwed.

I'm OK with illegal aliens getting driver's licenses and highly approve of this. You need to have a license to get auto insurance, and if I'm peacefully skating up the street and someone nails me with their car, someone's going to have to pay that hospital bill, if I survive. I hope they have  insurance and since our migrant farm workers drive whether they have a license or not, give them the damn license so I can have my medical bills paid.  The long  rifle thing though? I have frequently had the urge to take a rifle with me to Starbucks, I've just never done it. That's why I usually go to Peet's Coffee and Tea instead.

/Barnes and  Noble has a Starbucks in it, so it's hard to avoid the place while book shopping sometimes

Illegals clean our homes, mow our lawns, and pick our crops -- they're integrated members of our society and economy. It's a horribly racist double standard to refuse to deport them because we want them doing these jobs at a low wages, and then claim they shouldn't be in this country so we need to marginalize them as much as possible. You cannot have it both ways. We clearly want them here, so let's extend to them they same rights and privileges that everyone else gets.

Pfff... America has one of the laxest and least enforced immigration policies in the world. The process is laborious for legal immigrants because of the sheer influx of illegals gumming up the system.

It just seems crazy, either get these individuals documented and legal, whether it's short term, long term or permanent, or don't and get rid of them.

It all seems an effort to side step the real issue of the immigration policy.

It's like fat chicks buying themselves new earrings that they think make them look slimmer. No, you're still fat, address your diet and exercise, and stop the run around.

I can understand the problem more than many probably can. I'm an American by birth, but have gone through immigration/documentation twice for two several year stints elsewhere for work. The first place, someone messed up my paperwork, and I was told to either leave (I had already been there 1.5 years) or face deportation. Second one went smoother, and only recently ended, but the anxiety over the situation sucked. I'm not going to do that again, and my empathy goes out for for those who have to do it, or live in similar (or worse) circumstances.

So, to summarize:

-illegal intruders get more rights, like drivers licenses

-legal citizens get less rights, like more unnecessary restrictions on their gun rights

I really have to wonder whose side the California politicians are on. They smell like traitors to me.
