Fourteen years on the job without a blemish, Town Clerk is put on trial by the Chief of Police for stealing a hundred dollars. Of course, he didn't bother to check whether the money was actually missing

FTA: His department lieutenant, Chris St. Cyr -- who is not an attorney -- served as prosecutor.

The department's case appeared to be in trouble almost from the outset.

No shiat.

She's worked there for over 30 years, so it's probably a safe bet to say she was.

That's nothing. In the South the cop would act as the prosecutor, judge, jury, and executioner.

A fund should be set up to pursue every legal action against the official who brought up these charges in order to destroy this individual in every single way a human can be destroyed in court.

Cop math?

"It was not clear late Monday whether York, an elected town officer with more than three decades on the job, would return as Dalton's clerk or retire. She has been on leave since being charged."

Fourteen years without a blemish doesn't necessarily mean she's innocent. It might just mean she hadn't been caught yet.

At the same time, going from video to trial without actually investigating whether there was any money truly missing from the cash drawer and attempting to find out what the video meant is gross incompetence.

Video doesn't lie, but it doesn't necessarily tell the whole story.

It seems like there's a phrase we use in court in this country, something about being innocent until proven guilty. THIS IS WHY WE HAVE IT. Because cretins like Bizarreman want to presume that everyone's done something and just not been caught before now.

This.

And where was the city council in all this? And how do you bring such charges in a municipal court. And who's the complaintant. This goes beyond qualified immunity - sue everybody, including the judge for not dismissing the complaint.

He might be a child molester, he might not be a child molester, but there seems to be an awful lot of talk about him and child molesting, so I'm just gonna go ahead and assume that he is, indeed, a child molester. Why be half-safe?

I haven't bothered to check but this is probably a one room courthouse housed in the city hall with a folding chair city council. And the police chief with his deputy/prosecuted are 50% of the police force. Also the only type of place where stealing 100 dollars from the coffers would be considered scandalous.

Hard not to come to the conclusion that someone was looking to save a little pension money by trumping up a charge. So, when does the clerk sue the town for wrongful arrest, prosecutorial misconduct, etc., etc., to pad that pension money with some sweet punitive cash?

The Chief and his deputy are 50% of the police force.  According to the Dalton NH (pop. 979) Town Report the Police budget for 2011 was only $41,700, with 4 total officers, and only 301 total calls all year.
