I'm going to step out on a limb here and say that there is some financial incentive akin to a tax shelter that make this a financially wise move. I say this with zero knowledge of how the Chinese economy works, but with the skepticism that I have for all decisions regarding finance.

If they've known each other since they were 5 years old my guess is that he isn't some horrible surprise. Also, dowry is an ancient custom, not a payoff to get rid of your daughter.
