Gonna go out on a limb and say the itchy sweater guys aren't being pulled off the cancer projects.

No Time To Explain
Maybe the itchy part of wool sweaters will itch away the cancer?

/SCIENCE!

DNRTFA, but if you do research useful to industry then, f*ck cancer, Imma get me some funding to figure out how to make cheaper and less itchy wool synthetics!

That was actually a fairly interesting article.

And oh, wool sweaters made of cheap yarn itch. Good yarn does not itch. What defines cheap yarn when it comes to sweater? Short length of fiber being used to spin the wool. The fiber threads then stick out more and trigger the itch response against your skin more. And, as short length fibers are generally far more coarse, that's even worse.

Try a good sweater and it's not an issue.

For those who ask why such fiber is used in yarn it's because short, coarse fiber lengths like that are well wearing. They make amazingly warm, long lasting, thick socks. And, as your feet tend to be less tender and sensitive, they don't itch usually. Also, because of how much friction they are exposed to on feet as opposed to the rest of the body, they build up a felted layer both on the inside and outside of the sock, which helps keep your feet even warmer and helps keep moisture out (but with the bonus of moisture being wicked away from your skin because wool breathes well). Good wool socks are awesome hiking socks

/why yes, I am a knitter
//has a closet full of very nice wool sweaters that don't itch
/sadly my first one itches like hell because it was cheap yarn

I'm not close to the technical details of wool...but my merino base layer is the bomb. I wear it next to my skin for biking, running and snowboarding. It's ace and doesn't smell even after a few days of hard graft.

Yeah, merino FTW!

Seems to wear out fairly quick for me though? Getting holes by neck and armpits on my Icebreaker 150/200. You experience the same?

Most likely because Merino is a cheap, over bred wool (they won the wool wars, and it's been downhill for that breed every since). A good Shetland wool would be better for things like that, but they don't mass produce Shetland wool garments of that style.

/yes, there were Wool Wars

This was a triumph!
I'm making a note here:
"huge success!!"

It's hard to overstate
My satisfaction.

Aperture science:
We do what me must
Because we can.

For the good of all of us.
Except the ones who are dead.

But there's no sense crying
Over every mistake.
You just keep on trying
Till you run out of cake.
And the science gets done.
And you make a neat gun
For the people who are
Still alive.

I'm not even angry...
I'm being so sincere right now-
Even though you broke my heart,
And killed me.

And tore me to pieces.
And threw every piece into a fire.
As they burned it hurt because
I was so happy for you!

Now, these points of data
Make a beautiful line.
And we're out of beta.
We're releasing on time!
So i'm glad i got burned-
Think of all the things we learned-
For the people who are
Still alive.

Go ahead and leave me...
I think i'd prefer to stay inside...
Maybe you'll find someone else
To help you?
Maybe black mesa?
That was a joke! haha!! fat chance!!

Anyway this cake is great!
It's so delicious and moist!

Look at me: still talking
When there's science to do!
When i look out there,
It makes me glad i love you.

I've experiments to run.
There is research to be done.
On the people who are
Still alive.
And believe me i am
Still alive.
I'm doing science and i'm
Still alive.
I feel fantastic and i'm
Still alive.
While you're dying i'll be
Still alive.
And when you're dead i will be
Still alive.

Still alive.

Still alive.

Sadly, the anti-itch wool sweater project was shut down when Mr. Johnson discovered there were no shower curtian applications.

Fun facts. Scientists in Munich doing things like looking for biomarkers of cancer went through a cycle of finding human keratin proteins, and then mouse keratin proteins and then sheep keratin proteins in repeated experiments.
Upon thoughtful analysis it turned out that the human keratin proteins were detected in September, the Mouse Keratin proteins in late October and the sheep Keratins in December.
The September result was human contamination from all those scientists returning from their sunny holidays, peeling their overexposed skin. The October results were due to the field mice scurrying in from out of the cold and generally contaminating the labs, and the sheep Keratins were from the woollen sweaters scientists started wearing once the weather turned cold.

This happened once the technologies got that sensitive to notice such things.

\does that count for CSB in a geeky science way?

Dalek Caan's doomed mistress: helps keep moisture out (but with the bonus of moisture being wicked away from your skin because wool breathes well).

Even wet wool retains heat well, though. Unlike other fabrics that I could mention.

Cheap wool itches. Fine wool like lambswool, marino, alpaca and cashmere does not. But none of this has anything to do with the FA beyond a stupid title.

It's also flame-retardant. Wool will self-extinguish when lit.

Make a gansey out of semigreased wool, and it will have all of these qualities, plus will be water-resistant.

Why are they so itchy? Because they're made out of wool!

Really, they couldn't figure that out?

If this results in ways to make wool no longer itchy, I will SO HAPPY. I want to knit with the good stuff!

And yes, good wool is itchy to me. Even angora is itchy! Animal fibers and I just don't get along. Sigh.
