I'm pleading guilty to just trying to sound clever having read the term Bushmaster in a few article following some recent appalling shootings in the US. I actually know nothing about guns.

Although the story would be twice as amusing had the clerk pulled a cattle prod in response.

Then you have learned nothing. According to Fark the clerks first move should have been to talk to and attempt to reason with criminal. If that a failed the clerk should have attempted to run away. If unable to do that the clerk should have submitted to whatever the criminal wanted and then dialed 911 at the first opportunity providing he/her survived the encounter.
