Florida Atlantic University is now famous for TWO things: Producing an amazing running back, and employing a complete nutball as a professor who is officially the nation's leading "Sandy Hook denier"

When questioned about his theories by a local CBS12 news reporter, Tracy responded, "The whole country mourned about Sandy Hook, but yet again the investigation that journalistic institutions should have carried out never took place, in my opinion."

He sounds very much like the journalistic version of a few of my fellow Philosophy students in college, who thought all you needed to be a philosopher was to just ask "why" about everything.

But worse and inhuman.

So all those grieving parents were...what? paid actors?  and all the Funerals just elaborate shams where people who pretended to be the devastated friends and relatives where just putting on a show?

This goes beyond nutty conspiracy theorist into serious mental illness territory.  It reminds me of the psychological condition where people wake up one day  and sincerely believe that everyone they know and love have been replaced by exact android duplicates or something/

As with most conspiracists, he suffers from severe cognitive dissonance.  Perhaps he should have taken some Philosophy classes while at Iowa.

Or, he could just be an attention whoring asshole like Alex Jones.

Number one, that's not what the First Amendment says. The First Amendment says "You are free to read anything and respond with mockery." Number two, and more importantly, the First Amendment applies only to the government and to certain government-funded or -controlled organizations. Florida Atlantic University may well be such an institution if it is a state institution or accepts government money, but Fark, Inc. certainly is not such an institution.

Seconding mental illness. We really need to get some sort of early detection system in place so we can catch and treat these people before they become right-wing radio personalities and speakers of the house.

I'm glad I did my under-graduate degree somewhere where the professors were pretty dead set against the notion of needlessly asking "Why?" and holding students to a degree of rigour. On the other hand, I've spent the last ten years or so learning that quite a few of them could have used remedial education in the courses they taught... Goddamnit, why aren't professors all-knowing, transcendent gods rather than mere human meat?

If he's not tenured, he will probably be fired.

It wasn't tolerated.  They washed out of the discipline or did extremely poorly.  The toughest prof we had loved to torture one of them in class.  How that kid didn't kill himself is beyond me.  Probably the fact that he had so much money he didn't care if he passed or not.

I'll admit I haven't been keeping up on the issue. Still waiting for a satisfactory acknowledgement of "mental illness". It seems like it was mentioned and the media took it and ran, mostly because it makes people feel better. "Oh my god, that tragedy...what if that happened here? .... Oh, he was "mentally ill", so it won't happen again...whew!"

Genius! All the 'deceased' children are currently working in Solyndra underground facility. Their little, ten year old hands are the perfect size to assemble modern solar collectors. Expect more "killings" as this evil company needs more tiny hands for its evil, green business.

I really, really want to know how no-talent crazypants guys like this can get a tenure-track teaching position while top-of-the-class students I knew at places like Oxford and Princeton are stuck in university administration or part-time positions. How the hell did FAU pick this guy, out of presumably hundreds of applicants (and even community college positions get hundreds of applications) to be their next great professor?

I really enjoyed my philosophy classes. Well, the one after the first, which was designed to "Teach you about critical thinking" and how to "question your own beliefs". Which was kinda boring to me, because Pratchett books had already caused me to start doing that years prior... plus, it was in a class that was too large for a group discussion and a teacher that didn't like it if you felt one of the philosophers was using fallacious arguments (and could explain why).

The other two classes I got to take were awesome. It may be because I enjoyed debating (and if the rest of the class started agreeing with me, was able to start picking apart my own arguments) and just liked to try to get to the truth or heart of the matter. And the teacher was fine with you disagreeing with him (we had a fun argument about the Ship of Theseus).

I can't believe any thinking human being would really say that. "Crisis actors"??? What the F*CK?!??!?

If this guy really thinks that Sandy Hook didn't happen, that those parents didn't really lose their children and this was just some kind of emergency-response drill--he's more heartless and psychotic than the shooter ever dreamed of being.
