When I was married, I had a nephew-in-law whose nickname was 'Demon'. He probably could have benefited from an exorcism...

I missed that part. If they're from the Congo I'm surprised they didn't outright kill her. People down there take what we would jokingly call evil every seriously. they'll kill you if you hit someone with you car, because you're probably a demon.

Another similar case went to trial in Boraas last year. The accused, also from DR Congo, were acquitted...

So, it's just a... Congo line?

If every religious nut around the world who believed in demonic possession were convinced that stupidity was a sure sign of possession of the grand demon, Stupefactus Maximus, and that the only way to counteract Stupefactus Maximus was to read books by Richard Dawkins (The God Delusion), Carl Sagan (The Demon-Haunted World), and Bertrand Russell (Why I Am Not a Christian), it might be the magic bullet that rids the world of religious possession...

I know right? Exorcisms don't work on witches.

I've been told that exorcism is in the same field as multiple personality disorder. Treating people as possessed or as MPD reinforces the condition and basically rewards the undesired behavior.

That being said, IANA psychological therapist, so I don't know what the proper response is to such behavior. But I suspect treatment is mostly "treat them as the normal person" and "treat the alt as if it was the normal" until they stopped reaching for the alt.

I've read too much economics and I see a lot of psychological mumbo jumbo torn down to a reward structure. If you treat a condition by paying it more attention and the condition is essentially "attention whore" then you're rewarding the condition in traditional treatments. An economic aspect to human psychology is basically "suck it up" and is a rather rough method that doesn't approach genuine problems.

/I suspect I'm mildly manic-depressive

It's not just animists, either. Here's a photo of the aftermath of the self-immolation of the Ugandan Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments, a splinter Catholic group. I was going to post it directly to Fark, but it's pretty sickening...

Yeah, Africa is a pretty backwards place, which is ironic because apparently they've been around the longest. It's got to the point where they can't blame their problems on whitey any more which leaves the only conclusion that their culture is bad and they should feel bad.

It's hard for me to blame anyone from DRC--or anywhere in sub-Saharan Africa for that matter--for being superstitious, ignorant fools. You have to consider anyone under the age of 60 spent his or her whole life under that benign and kindly ruler Mobutu Sese Seko, who didn't do a thing for his people except make sure they were poor, ignorant and desperate while looting the country of every single dime that came into it. How could anyone learn there were no such thing as witches when there were no such things as schools in most of Zaire?

Then after Mobutu was kicked to the curb, the Congolese got two dictators in a row (Laurent Kabila and his useless son Joseph) who spent the next 15 years embroiling Congo in an endless series of civil wars. There really is no "Democratic Republic of Congo" right now, just Kinsasha and a swatch of jungle variously  held by armies from Angola, Rwanda, Uganda, the CAR and terrorists from assorted militias and the Lord's Resistance Army.

So it sounds awful that these people are so stupid they'd think their daughter was possessed by demons or whatever; but where were they supposed to get better information? It's a miracle they even knew there was a world beyond the DRC to live in.

Yup.

Then atheists wonder why people look down on them as arrogant and militant, when they're out trying to regard all people of faith (pretty much anybody but them) as mentally ill.

Yeah, keep farking that chicken, atheists. Telling people they are sick in the head for having religious faith is sure to win you converts to nihilistic atheism. Works about as well as the "you're all going to Hell!" works for various extremist Abrahamic faiths.

Never mind that modern Atheism has many of the trappings of a religion, they just refuse to acknowledge it.

They've got their texts that tell them what to think: The God Delusion et al. (like was cited by Psycat)

They've got charismatic and dogmatic leaders: Richard Dawkins is the most prominent now. Madeline Murray O'Hare was another one. Carl Sagan tried to put a nicer face on things.

They've got rituals: Unbaptism, including unbaptism by proxy (with Bill Maher performing the ritual on behalf of Mitt Romney's father Link).

They've got symbols: A number of them are out there, the "darwin fish" may be the most known on the internet, but there are several other symbols commonly associated with atheism including a letter A with a circle drawn around it. A GIS shows several common symbols.

They've got their dogma and doctrine: There is no God, no supernatural, no afterlife, just a vast meaningless universe of which we are nothing but a random accident to happen, with no purpose in life and no meaning. Also, anybody who disagrees with this and tries to assign any higher meaning to things is mentally ill and should be treated as such.

Yeah, they don't believe in God. It's still a religion. Not all religions have a "God" per-se. Some forms of Buddhism have no deity. Taoism isn't about a deity. They have made a religion out of saying they have no religion.

Atheists railing against dogmatic religions are like that Chappelle Show sketch about the black White Supremacist, they are just as dogmatic and ideological, they just refuse to acknowledge what they really are.

A true atheist, one who isn't dogmatic, doesn't believe, and doesn't care. It doesn't come up to him, he doesn't try to go around convincing others that they are mentally ill and must abandon religion to become Atheists. He doesn't try to incarcerate Priests, bulldoze Churches and forbid worship services with the expressed goal of the eradication of religion, like the League of Militant Atheists did in the 1920's and 1930's (Link)

I used to not mind atheists, but the jackasses I keep running into online are really making me think the couple of nice ones I've met in real-life are the exception and not the rule.

Honestly. I think a babylon 5 season 1 episode put it best.

You can find it on the WB channel's streaming website.

At the end, Sinclair introduced the ambassadors to the Earth's belief system. First was an Atheist he shook hands with. As the ambassadors shook hands with that one, Sinclair announced all the rest of the religions. There was a very long line as the credits came up.
