They say the fire began when a band on stage started a fireworks display at the Kiss nightclub in the city of Santa Maria, in Rio Grande do Sul state.


A reporter at the scene told local radio that the nightclub had a capacity for up to 2,000 people and was believed to be full on a Saturday night.

Thick smoke engulfed the venue after acoustic insulation caught fire, officials say.

Same here.  Actually played there a few times, and to this day I still don't know how it feels to be so goddamned dumb that lighting anything larger than a lighter on that stage was a GOOD idea.  Hell, never mind the whole "flammable walls" thing, you could touch the light rigs while you played!

snark aside, this is horrible. I've never once considered something like this happening to me, And I've been to raves before where there were 20,000-30,000 stuffed in on one dance floor (like at the Staples Center) on New years eve.

Regarding the RI disaster, I read somewhere that a lot of people died in the doorway of the club because as people tried to escape the fire, they would fall/accidentally get pushed down. Then the people in back of them would fall on top of them.

Yes, but I will guarantee you that the Staples Center isn't insulated with flammable material and that they didn't set off fireworks next to it.

It's one thing to do it in a sports arena, it's another to do it in a regular sized building.

The problem is, despite the full knowledge that said materials could save lives, they still charge a ton for them.  IIRC, it would've cost the Derderians about $350-400k to soundproof the main room at The Station, and that was for maaybe 2000 square feet of soundproofing, ten years ago. (None of which would've worked, BTW - they still had solarium windows in the pool room directly off the main floor.)

40 out of the 100 that died there died in the exit hallway, or directly leading into it.  At least a few of those deaths are also retraceable to Great White & the security dumbasses who blocked the stage door for a minute or two before realizing they were in trouble.
