Eh, I'm a straight male who likes watching some of the British Royal family goings-on. I enjoyed watching some of the Diamond Jubilee stuff last year, especially that big boat parade. I wish I could have been there to see that. Seemed like a helluva party to be around, despite the fact it was raining. I must admit I also watched a bit of the wedding stuff.

I just find the pageantry and all of the traditions really fascinating- there are so many arcane protocol details in any events of state involving royalty and I find them all really interesting. Plus, I've found that familiarity with all the various royal family histories creates a pretty good framework for remembering historical dates and time periods.

The wedding stuff was a blast. We had a good thread here about it.

It's pretty interesting to read about some of the stuff that's been around for decades...regarding the Brits, at least. They make a point of saying stuff like "This is the carriage such and such used back in 1895," and so forth...a lot of those cars, boats, and carriages have their own wikipedia entries.

I was on the Island of Sint Maarten for five months.I got to see Queen Beatrix on a motorcade going through the city,which only has one main road.I told a few natives the queen waved at me...They asked if I had flipped her off.They hate her..The Dutch people I met on 'The Friendly Island' are just that.

Yup- All of the carriages involved in the Royal Wedding were used for other historically significant occasions as well. Trooping the Colour is another event that's always really fun to watch.

Did you know someone fired at the Queen once at Trooping the Colur, back when she was younger and still riding side saddle in the procession? The gun was loaded with blanks, but she wasn't even ruffled- just controlled her horse, kept it from going nuts and let her guards take care of business.
