Yes it was.  That famous picture was staged after the fact.

No you moran. The first flag was taken down on orders as the Marines wanted to keep it for themselves and not let a politician get his hands on it. It is now on display in the Marine Corp museum. A second flag was brought up the hill. The flag came from an LST and was much larger than the first. A section of drain pipe was found and the flag attached. A simple "hey guys lend a hand" was called out and the six flag raisers answered. Rosenthal lucked out as he turned and took the shot. There is even a color film of it. Nothing about it was staged. Just six Marines  following an order. It was even acknowledged in that bad John Wayne film in the opening credits that it was the second flag raising. Nothing was staged. Rosenthal was dogged for years and accused of posing the Marines in the scene. It just wasn't so.

That's kind of what "staged" means, not that it was literally on a stage.  It wasn't the first flag raised.

It doesn't matter. If something involves someone being within 10 yards of a gun, GAT is going to spin it as negative and indicative of societal decline, and declare everyone involved a barbarian mouthbreather manipulated by shadowy forces.

That's not what staged means. The photographers had no knowledge it was going to happen. The flag was being rplaced. Yeah if the a Marine publicist said hey guys get up there and set up some shots...yeah staged. MacArthur having his Leyte landing picture filmed repeatedly, yeah...staged.

Another "staged" flag raising for GAT

  • Staged also implies the battle was over, which it wasn't, it was still raging and would for weeks to come. Only three of the six guys who raised that flag survived that battle.

Another "staged" flag raising for GAT

Im not sure thats the counter example you want to use. Pretty sure they packed the flag, pole, and camera just so that photo could be snapped. That was about as staged as it gets. Unless you are hinting at the sound stage conspiracy theory, in which case, lets just not add to the stupidity.

  • My paternal grandfather was actually standing behind the camera when this photo was taken (not the photographer though.)

This wasn't exactly on a sound stage (no pun intended) after the fact. After they raised the flag, three of the six men in the photo were killed in the ongoing battle.

No. As I recall from reading Flags of our Fathers, the photo of the first flag-raising (it's in TFA) was staged. The photographer had the dude in the foreground pose, etc etc. The second flag was just an impromptu replacement, it wasn't a photo op -- the guy who took the photo almost missed it, and iirc didn't even look through the viewfinder when he took the shot. He noticed the flag going up, and only had enough time to point his camera in the general direction and snap the shutter.

I think what he means is that it wasn't the first flag raising on Mount Suribachi.  It was done after the fact and not by the original fighters but rather by some Marines laying wire.

In the mean time, here's a nice song about one of the second group of flag raisers and how we didn't treat them any better when they came back than we do now: http://www.myspace.com/music/player?s id=80448954&ac=now

  • My grandfather, a member of the 5th Marine Division, was on Iwo Jima, Red Beach.  He passed away in the early 70's.  What those men went through, no one should have to endure.  My mom said that after he returned in late '45, he was never the same.  He left, as a square jawed Marine, but came back changed.
For months after, my mom remembers many a night of hearing him screaming in his sleep.  Because of a Jap mortar attack, he lost the hearing in his right ear, shrapnel wounds to his right side that killed a couple buddies.  Until the day he died, you NEVER walked up behind him unannounced and tapped him on the shoulder...he would turn around swinging.
The only lighthearted moment (he never said how he got it), was a officers sword he came back with.  When asked, he said he captured the officer, told him a joke, and the guy laughed to death.

  • I have a lot of trouble believing a "No shiat there I was" story from 70 years ago.  I know plenty of dudes from my unit that reclassed from 11B to VH1Storyteller as soon as they got home.  Even with only five years passing, those stories get more and more extravagant.  I wonder how many grandchildren fawn over a POG without even knowing.
