  • Does it come with a personalized Lionel Barrymore to tell me how we're all going to die in a hurricane?
  • I'm just a simple paper clip calibrator and my wife is the conductor for a local parakeet choir, but that seems really close to our budget, surprisingly enough!
  • Well that place looks like it cleaned up real nice after the last storm surge to hit it.
  • And you can enjoy it for approximately ten years until it's underwater. What a deal!

Those shows actually point out something true but underappreciated about the economy in general and the real estate market in specific: most wealth is inherited, not earned, and your family circumstances are the biggest determiner of what you're in the market for.

If you earn $150k/yr and have a few student debts and an average credit card balance you might qualify for a $500k mortgage after you save up a deposit.

Or, if you earn $35k/yr, your parents paid for your college, and you inherited a $400k house your nana bought (for a quarter of its inflation-adjusted value) and paid off in full, you can qualify for the same mortgage tomorrow.

And as the housing market gets more and more expensive, it's the latter situation that better represents who young homebuyers are.
  • Didn't RTFA but wanted to say my kids get good value out of a cheap lawn sprinkler on a hot day. Does that count?
  • What I noticed was the permanent Connect Four fixture in the tiki hut.
  • ... and the staff to maintain it.
  • It will be private, after I release my alligators and E. coli there.
