Give me back my damn fingerprint sensor.

Plenty of phones have fingerprint sensors.

/ Offer not valid for people frightened into believing they MUST have the latest iPhone
  • GardenWeasel: I've had one on all my recent Androids, but the upcoming flagships have all ditched them for facial recognition.

I'm going to ride my my G6 as long as I can.

I'm considering a new phone. I just checked and everything on my list has a fingerprint sensor on the rear.

Update to the latest iOS and it will give you the ability to pay with your passcode if face recognition doesn't work, such as when using a mask.

I dunno why somebody funnied this. It's true!

That must be a horrible inconvenience for you.

I would imagine it being more of an inconvenience to the folks around him not wanting to get sick.

Do RFID wallet protectors work? Seems it would be easier to get a credit card with that chip, pull it out, boop it, and put it back into the wallet. If you are paranoid about scanners. I'm hoping mine works, at least.

  • well... really it is causing the facial recognition industry to constrain its input data and focus on new algorithms to resolve their comparisons.

This will improve the facial recognition industries technology -- and threaten even more privacy.
  • A year from now, hopefully you are going to look back on this pandemic and ____________.

After you realize you can't use Apple Pay without slipping off your mask consider other payment options.

You can't hold your breath for the 1 second it takes? And you only have to uncover your nose. It just needs eyes and nose to see that it's you.

You don't even need to remove your mask anymore.  Look at your phone, it won't recognize you, and it will present a 'Pay with passcode' button.  Enter  your passcode. Done.

Pixel 4 has no fingerprint sensor . Didn't realise, not pleased.
  • Actually all of this might be bad news if you fear being recognized by a computer.  I suspect that the boffins who make such software are now have a huge incentive to make the computers recognize people even if they are wearing masks. If they can do this without requiring an unaffordable amount of computer resources, then the computers will be less dependent on a few locations of the face and thus will be even better when the masks come off.  If this comes to pass, then soon the computers will be better at identification then they would have been if the pandemic had never happened.

/They might also do more integration of vocal recognition.
//Not to mention smart phones whose owners whose privacy settings are lack.
///Our outfits can also be a clue as is the reality that we are likely to show up at certain places at certain times.  Sure that is not iron clad, but if it allows the computer to check against a few likely people instead of millions, it would cut down on needed computer power.

The Pixel 4a is expected to.

"On the back, the Pixel 4a will adopt the Pixel 4's square camera patch, even though the 4a will likely tout just one lens. A traditional rear-facing capacitive fingerprint sensor will handle authentication. "

I have a fingerprint scanner on my lowly Samsung.

My samsung does retina scan, but all of the biometrics option are slower and less reliable than typing a 4 digit pin, so I don't know why anyone uses them in the first place.

/apple probably disabled 4 digit pins or something, right?

Slower? Not by a long shot.
  • I dont want to be on this planet anymore: Meh, we'll just update the cameras to thermal and sell more.

Already exists, though I don't know how accurate it is at this point. Basically it maps the veins in your face rather than the usual facial recognition points, and works through masks and beards.

Obviously it doesn't have quite the same database to work from, but give it time.

The latest iOS allows you to turn off Face ID so that it asks for your PIN when you want to use Apple Pay.
