I've known about it since college, when I had to take a course on sewage treatment plants, as it's the mechanism behind type 2 settling. (the particles are attracted to each other, and as they gather into a clump (ie, flock) gravity overcomes the buoyant forces)
These days, I mostly use it to describe snow -- the big huge flakes that will stick to things, as opposed to the 'powder' stuff that skiers love but is absolutely crap for making snowballs.
