i think they cut off an opening shot of Radar from the opening credits, and it misses a note or two at the very beginning? Or was I going mad on my watch through when I was locked down and going mad with nothing else to do
It updated as the series went on. It was downright disco-y by the end with lots of high-hat crashes and drums

It's you they only take him out. If you also look at the intro they made subtle changes when BJ took over for Trapper, but the song is intact. Someone actually compiled all the openings the show had:

Now, I have to look into this, since my wife recently bought the whole series on disc.
You can take any random one from the first series with any random one from the final series.

Mandel wrote the music Michael Altman wrote the lyrics.
Robert Altman had his then 14 year old son Michael write the lyrics, because he wanted them to sound like the kind of goofy, maudlin thing a teenager would write.
As it turns out, Michael made far more off MASH than Robert did. Robert got a flat fee ($50K, I think) for directing the movie. Michael still gets royalties any time an episode of the TV show airs somewhere.
Robert didn't get any future royalties? I thought he knew what he was doing?
The song - with lyrics - always gets me. Growing up, I started on the TV show. Didn't see the movie until I was in my later teens - my dad didn't get it on VHS until then :) (early 90s) But I got that movie, SOB and a few other classics on DVD as soon as possible.
I agree...the movie version is hauntingly beautiful. I love the harmonies and chord modulations. The TV version is a little too clean and "peppy."
Well the TV is different than the movie, but they also added the chopped sounds so you can believe how real this was.

And don't forget his son ruined Game of Thrones and other movies.

My Google-fu has been honed through years of training to take on Skynet!
One of these days I'm going to miss one of these threads, maybe I already have? Who knows.
Also upthread someone brought up Captain Spalding, who I forget about basically 20 minutes after an episode where he appears because even as a kid I would always ask "What is this guy doing, and why?"

All in the Family MASH The Mary Tyler Moore Show The Bob Newhart Show The Carol Burnett Show
Never had to get up and change the channel.
The only one of those shows I usually went and did other things during was Bob Newhart in 1973. I *never* missed Carol Burnett, that cast was absolutely amazing even to 12yr old me (and yes, I cried during the closing segment of her final episode).

yup and Michael's dad Robert Altman directed the movie, made about $70,000 for doing so. Michael made $1,000,000 for the lyrics.
And counting... why did the dad have the same agent as his kid?
