    Not even sure WTF Marmite is, but it sounds disgusting.

    Marmite is the English equivalent of soy sauce.  A thick paste that tastes of umami and salt.

    And like many other things in England, overcooked so that it also tastes burnt and bitter.

    I have two in-laws with identical "ethnic" credentials, their mother's were both from Mexico, but from different regions.  Each will complain about the in-authentic Mexican food made by the other.


    Oh my god.  You should hear what Southerners will debate as far as cuisine.  What's really funny is to get a diverse mix of people - economic, racial, geographic - and hear them debate which is the "authentic" way to do it, while the rest of us stuff our faces.

    that's weird; a British chum used to complain that all she could find stateside was Canadian Marmite. (apparently the CFIA demanded the removal of hazardous vitamins and minerals, ruining the taste.) I can usually find it at Indo-Pak groceries.

    Check the baking section; a lot of grocery stores mistakenly put it there because it's a "yeast product"

    Way cheaper to get it at Food Basics than any specialty spot.

    While both exist to promote a product from their region, I don't know that the Idaho Potato Comission has ever tried to say that in order to call your dish "hasbrowns" the potatos have to be from Idaho.
  • So I figured that it was a fairly typical pasta sauce with Marmite mixed in to add some notes to the flavor, and was ready to a call everyone here a small-minded craven for automatically judging this recipe even though you never ate it, or thinking that a couple teaspoons of Marmite in a pint of sauce will make the sauce taste like Marmite.

    Now I see this recipe actually uses Marmite as pasta sauce.

    So, carry on.
