  • Guess we'll see now, won't we?

My own personal take is "Can we?  Of course we can.  The real question should be, Will we decide to?  And I very much fear the answer to that one is 'No'."
  • American can't even get a five-word headline right...so no, probably not.
  • Only if the bastards are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

Unless their sedition is made an example of, future despots will use their actions as a blueprint for dismantling the United States.

What happens to them needs to be horrifying enough to serve as a warning to the future: Don't f*ck around, or you'll find out.
  • Yeah, but we're going to need some shots and not just Covid vaccines.  Maybe some ointments too.  And a Silkwood shower.
  • NewportBarGuy: Which American?

    Any of them, I guess.
  • Where are the Trumplerites begging up to "Give the new president a chaaaance, even if he isn't your cup of tea," etc?

    This.

If they let these motherfarkers walk in the name of unity, they will be emboldened further and America will be pretty much doomed.
  • How long did it take for German after WWII?.
  • Half the country despises the other half.

    No, no we can't
  • 40% of America was I'll before Trump showed up.

This is the most polarized I've seen the country.
  • I mean, I hope I can.

It would help if y'all made him publicly suffer some though.

Kids die of COVID, goes bankrupt, sent to prison, only people who visit him go to laugh, that kind of thing.
  • Well only if we invest in cult deprogramming, maybe make it part of DHS or something.
  • Sure, once Trump, his crime family, and every Trumponian Kakistocracy sycophant go to jail, yes, of course America will return.
  • natural316: Half the country despises the other half.

    No, no we can't

Also a large and growing chunk actually seriously believe the other half are part of a global network of satanic pedophile cannibals. Who can heal that?
  • No, because we're (probably purposely in most cases) incorrectly identifying Trump as the illness rather than a symptom of the illness.
  • Hallows_Eve: How long did it take for German after WWII?.

It took a while and remember they had to take German citizens out to concentration camps and make them work there burying bodies before some of them believed what had happened. Maybe make them dig mass graves in the Dakotas or take care of kids in cages on the border. People say they are fine with that or just ignore it until it is in their face and have to deal with it.
  • I hope this is one of those exceptions to Betteridge's Law of Headlines...
  • No. After trump yes, but only after Fox/Murdoch/Koch/OAN etc. As long as these criminals stand between facts and trumpers, there's no healing. They make big money from diversion.
  • I think America can heal, mental health can get a boost, and affordable housing can be reached. We just build a lot of places with padded rooms for all these people and stick them in there after they followed Trump like that.
  • Regardless of what happens from any sort of legal standpoint, a few things have to happen to fix this problem.  Because it's not just a "Trump became President" problem.

We need to fix education.  We need to fix social media.  We need to stop the misinformation campaign that has kept so much of this country badly informed while vilifying the information that would show them otherwise.

Next, we need to revamp many of the rules, laws, and acts, that are simply ignored because no one enforces them.  Too much of it relies on polite gentlemanlike conduct.  And no plan was put in place for what to do when people do not behave in the manner that they should.
I suppose the expectation is that people would hold each other accountable, and encourage each other to stick to a code of honor.  They never considered what would happen when a group of people decide that power and control is more important than honor.

And that is where we stand right now.  I'm not intending to go all Klingon here, but our government has no honor.  Or shame, or ethics.  Because of that, we need to attach actual penalties to the rules so that their honor remains even if it's inconvenient for them.

You know - I have one solution that would go lightyears to fixing this problem.  ALL VOTES in the Senate are blind votes.  ALL of them.  That way people like McConnell can't keep a stranglehold on the GOP votes.  They would be free to vote how they really feel.
  • No.

And fark healing. Why should I want to engage in "healing" with a bunch of people who have revealed themselves to be cruel, lying, vindictive, arrogant, loud, proudly ignorant racists?

They are uniformly truly awful, deplorable, depraved, disgusting people.

Let them secede. Let them die off. We are *much* better off without them.

While I agree with the intent, I could imagine this backfiring spectacularly. Republicans vote in a bloc not for fear of McConnell, but because, like you've laid out above, they are "true believers" in what amounts to a political death cult. There is no room for different opinions within the caucus. Regardless of whether their votes are public or not, you know where they'll come down on issues. Democrats, on the other hand...like herding cats. I could see many more conservadems voting with the Republicans than the other way around if there were no consequences.
  • It's gonna be hard to heal after Trump when 70+ million people refuse to see or acknowledge how much of a monster he is.
