In principle, UV has been shown to work in many studies. I don't think there was any IN VIVO method, though, and after Trump made his dumb announcement, a lot of people were claiming that. It is typical of the administration that someone said something dumb, someone threw science out the window, and others rushed to cash in.
Hundreds of studies have been launched and many are producing good results that are going to help in treatments. It is very heartening for me.

There is a narrow range of UV-C around 220nm which is germicidal but probably safe for humans (needs more studies but it seems to work with mice). It doesn't penetrate deeply enough to damage the DNA in our cells. The drawback is that it needs expensive lamps and filters.
It's not for internal use but might be good at reducing airborne transmission.

It doesn't get anywhere near the retina, only the outer layer of the cornea.

More intense UV could be used inside of HVAC systems where the radiation would be contained away from human eyeballs and skin, yet recirculated air still gets sterilized.
