  • He might be a trash umpire, but half of those supposedly "missed" calls were literally on the line of the box and would have gone either way depending on who was behind the plate at the time, and people really need to stop being whiny coonts about things that are that close

I get your point there...but you just defended Angel Hernandez.

    Eww.
  • There's a reason he hasn't worked a World Series in 15 years, and it's not because he's Hispanic.

He's not the only one that sucks though. You have CB Bucknor and Phil Cuzzi too. Those clowns shouldn't even be doing rec league softball
  • lifeslammer:

The article mentions a few times that the average for umps is around 92%, mainly because of borderline calls like that. Hernandez as missing those and, and about as many blatantly obvious calls, which is why he is getting called out, and deservedly so.

You forgot Joe West.  For shame.

    Is Laz Diaz still around?

I don't recall him being as bad as the others, but I know he's a showboating asshole who makes the game about him.

Not to defend Hernandez, but this.

He has had a lot of bad games, and he does have an huge issue with trying to show up players and make the game about him, but in this case, I can't fault him on borderline pitches like that as long as he was calling them the same both ways
  • He was wrong but he was consistently wrong. That's all you can ask

This is my problem with Hernandez too.  It's not that he "misses" borderline strikes/balls (I'd rather an ump be consistent with the calls than be exact), it's the times he makes a strike call on a borderline or completely changes his strike zone and then stares down the batter daring them to say something.

No one is tuned in or paid for tickets to the "Ump Show" the best umps/refs in ANY sport are the ones you don't realize even worked the game.

This. If he's being consistent about it, giving those outside strikes but taking away the top and bottom of the box, as a pitcher I'm going outside when I need a punch out, and setting them up with high and low inside.

    Joe West, too.
  • As a ref for amateur hockey, I would be embarrassed if my rating was anywhere in the 80s. Even at an amateur level, we strive for better than that. My rating is 96%. That I, random f*ckwit reffing low-level games, has a better rating than a professional, is f*cking embarrassing. Angel is a f*cking disgrace and needs to be removed, and I say that as someone who doesn't give a sh*t about MLB but cares about integrity of officials.

Joe west is a pile of shiat stacked in an umpire's uniform, but he calls a decent, at least average, strike zone.
my problem with west is that he thinks everyone paid to watch him call a game.
  • And this idiot had the gall to claim MLB was discriminating against him for not giving him a promotion, when it's obvious that he doesn't deserve his damn job.

/BTW, he lost that discrimination lawsuit last week

  • Maybe he's trying to get fired so he can sue for retaliation based on his lawsuit.
  • I used to work with a guy who would umpire A and AA spring training games.  Even he couldn't stand Angel Hernandez.

You say that in jest but sometimes I feel like no matter what we do, everyone is pissed at us.

    CSB:
I was reffing a game, and early on I noticed A and B had a particular animosity towards each other. During a break, I called the other ref and the linesmen in for a huddle and pointed it out, and they agreed, so we decided to keep an eye on them. The rest of the first period and most of the 2nd were fairly uneventful when it came to those two. Late in the second, A slashes B in the face pretty badly(I could tell it was unintentional and A was aiming for the shoulder, but I have to call on what happened), to the point B is taken off the ice and doesn't return for the rest of the game. A scrum breaks out, and while the linesmen deal with that, I escort A to the box to make sure there's no further escalation. As I'm escorting him, he tells me he feels bad, he didn't mean to hit B in the face, but he understands he f*cked up and it's my job to call him on that.

Long story short, I give A a major for slashing. I toyed with tossing him from the game but I decided not to, because while the slash was bad, it was obviously not intended to hit the face. We go to talk to the coaches. A's coach is furious, saying A is a superstar who will be in the NHL one day and I have no right to call him for a major(I do). The other ref tells me during intermission that B's coach was just as pissed, because I didn't toss A from the game and we didn't assess a bench minor to A's coach for...I'm not sure what.

So yea, no matter what we do, someone is gonna be pissed. Job hazard, I guess.
  • It's not just that Angel Hernandez is bad...he misses a lot of pitches that end up being called third strikes (or should have been).  In other words - he's a choker. That's how I've always seen him.

I actually like the human element to it. I have no problem with human umpires, but they should be subject to relegation based on call accuracy.

I also don't mind when an ump expands the strike zone during blowouts. What's the sense in squeezing a pitcher when a team is up 12 runs in the 9th? There's a difference between giving an inch off the plate and giving 6", of course, but sometimes the tv angles are misleading when the strike zone is superimposed.

    Relegation? You mean termination?
