I think most of Copperfield's big TV tricks involved having the camera look at something else. Misdirection is easy when you control exactly what the audience gets to see.
Davis Copperfield was ok, and a lot of his tricks sort of stand the test of time.
The tricks of Lance Burton, however, really don't hold up under the gaze of modern Video resolutions (Roller coaster escapology obvious green-screen), or more tellingly, viewers paying attention to the edges when the camera pans out
I was too young for this one (2 years old) but i remember his shows were must watch TV in the late 80's when they had a special on. As a wide eyed kid, the tricks were just incredible.
I just saw Terror Train for the first time a few hours ago. I liked it. Spooky. Not what I was expecting. And it had 21 year old Jamie Lee Curtis, which is nice.
While Copperfield said he was doing it to show "how precious liberty is and how easily it can be lost," adding, "I can show with magic how we take our freedom for granted," not surprisingly, he didn't actually make the statue disappear.
WOAH WOAH WOAH!!!
This accusation puts in doubt the very existence of magic!!!

I mean, that's something that always kept me from really getting blown away by what Copperfield was doing -- it was too elaborate, too staged, too planned. I kind of felt like just about anyone could do "magic" if they had that big a production budget behind them.
Strait jacket, dammit.

That's why I never watched Chris Angels tv series, you could see the seems pretty easily with all the camera cuts.
