vilesithknight:This is a bad situation. Made worse by a video that doesn't begin to tell the story. I live in Columbus. Local news outlets are telling the story, but national media is not. 3 girls showed up to Bryant's house to jump her for something that happened at school. Bryant then grabbed a kitchen knife to defend herself. I ask, wtf would you do if 3 people showed up at your house to jump you?
Assuming they are not breaking into the house, I would call the police and stay inside until the police arrived. Calling the police, and then rushing outside with a knife would be pretty much the last thing on my mind.
And I think my answer to your first question pretty much negates every other statement that you made.
As does the body cam footage, as well as the lying account from the witness who said the knife was on the ground.
You are rushing to judgement here, and disseminating untrue statements as fact. And that's very, very dangerous at this point in our history.
The family stated: She didn't have a knife, it was on the ground. She called the police. She was being attacked.
The facts: They haven't released the name of who called 911. The girl had a knife. The girl swung that knife at two people, on video. The girl refused to de-escalate ("Get down") The girl refused to stop attacking (not defending).
Folks, someone is dead. Racing to conclusions won't make them come back to life. If you truly want justice. If you truly want change. Focus on the facts.
Dusk-You-n-Me:DeathByGeekSquad: What will they do when a simple traffic stop becomes a gun battle with someone firing an AK-47?
That wasn't a simple traffic stop, it was the end of a high speed pursuit. The idea that cops get routinely ambushed at traffic stops has no basis in reality.
except this one where the officer is executed:
Dashcam Footage From Fatal Shooting of Officer Darian Jarrott
And that WaPo article I linked. Do you remember when it came out? Do you ever hear a politician cite it?
No. Because the actual numbers don't fit the narrative. WaPo found that blacks were 23% of the killings. Sure, blacks are only 13% of the population.
But when you consider the % of murders and violent crimes committed by blacks (and that isn't racism, it's just actual farking reality) it's practically a miracle AND a testament to police work that only 23%, and 230 are killed by police every year.
Avigdore:mrshowrules: It is a fair comment. However, it doesn't matter if the police in fact help black people the fast majority of the time, if you are afraid to call them, you don't benefit from the service. Perception is also important.
Good point. Who would benefit from convincing people that police don't actually help the '(f) vast majority of the time'?
I don't what you mean. I want police reform so all members of society feel safe turning to them for help. If my child is having a mental breakdown and is a danger to themselves, I want to be able to call someone without the fear that it would result in my child's death.
1. Your freeze-frame photo of the girl with the knife shows a DEFENSIVE posture. She's trying to hold off the people trying to attack her. And you're trying to paint it as her being the aggressor because you really really want the white cop to be justified in shooting a black girl. And you f#cking know it.
2. HE. SHOT. HER. FIVE. TIMES. AT. CLOSE. RANGE!
3. He has a f#cking taser for a f#cking reason, and he's presumably f#cking trained to use it when his life is not in imminent danger.

No... I think it's high time to disarm the police.
Wonderful
That has zero relevance to whether this particular shooting was legally justified
It wasn't. Period. No police shooting is justified. This is especially true when the dead person didn't have a gun themselves.
Unless we can be sure that the police are responsible with their guns, they should not be carrying them. And they have shown over and over and over again, that they are not responsible.
How's that? Is that clear enough for you?
That's amazingly stupid.
Police sometimes have to shoot somebody to save their lives or the lives of others, as in this case. Tragic, yes, but justified.
We can agree to disagree. But it seems to me that most of the shootings we hear about are more cops panicking than being justified because their lives were in danger.
How many stories do we have to hear before you believe that is true?
I for one am sick of hearing those stories. So I stand by what I said. Disarm the farking cops. Once they prove they can be trusted, let them be armed again.
What's that you say, there are a lot of guns on the street?! Well, maybe it's time for some more sensible regulation of firearms while we're at it.

If you defund the police, who would've been called when this situation occurred? The cops didn't just show up, they were called there.
What do you think a social worker is going to do if she shows up there and people are kicking each other in the face and stabbing each other?
if you defund the police they would still be able to show up, they just would not have APCs and military style weapons to deal with a civilian population.
If you defund the police they would all have other jobs because their salaries were cut to zero dollars.

Naido:Loren: IndyJohn: Chauvin's s convicted murderer and rightly so. But let's wait for some additional facts to come out before we convict anyone else. There's video so the truth will come out.
Yeah, these cases need to get the video out pronto so we can see what's really going on. You can basically assume whichever side is in the wrong will lie so there's not much to learn until we have evidence.
Actually, we need to stop having knee jerk reactions. There will be all the time in the world to get pissed off. Not sure if you've noticed, but our nation's "journalists" have pretty much forgotten how to get anything at all right, especially in the first 24-48 hours. They just don't care, and neither do their consumers, evidently.
Disagree--they want to be right. It's just that they care more about being first than being right.
Kuroshin:There is literally no piece of evidence that could justify this. None. No explanation that could make this reasonable. None. There is no jump involved in coming to the conclusion that she was murdered without justification. None.
I can think of a justification. The basic scenario we have is that she was being attacked by several girls and was defending herself with a knife. What if the cops show up, the attackers back down and she goes after one of them?
adam6464:My question is, why do the cops always shoot center mass multiple times first? Can they not shoot a limb first to see if the "agressor" will stop and no further bullets are needed?
Congratulations, you just won the attempted murder charge. You just proved that you weren't in a position that warranted deadly force in the first place. (Exceptions for snipers taking out a hand holding a detonator or the like.)
LordJiro:It still shows that lethal force was far, FAR from necessary. If the pig was properly trained, he could have easily disarmed her, and he would have been a goddamn hero. But nope, because our police departments hire C-student meatheads with power fantasies and give them the bare minimum amount of 'training' before giving 'em guns and letting them loose, another child is dead.
I still haven't seen the bodycam video, but she was armed with a knife. The cop isn't going to try to disarm, that's a good way to get stabbed.
The shooting so watch with caution but she was probably about to kill someone
Yeah, that looks justified. Try to stab someone in front of a cop, expect to be shot.
SansNeural:Make me wonder when he pulls his piece. Start of the video his gun-in-hand is on the car door frame, moving past and closing the door. SOB must have been unsnapping the clasp on his holster as soon as he snapped the seatbelt loose.
Does that make any sense upon pulling up to a small group of people in broad daylight?
When weapons are involved, yes.
LordJiro:Farking this. With actual training, a cop could have EASILY stopped her, without a gun, before she inflicted any injuries, especially life-threatening ones.
But America, for whatever reason, doesn't actually like to hold its cops to any standards.
What America doesn't do is hold Fark commenters to any standards of knowledge.
Shoot her in the leg. I bet she would drop the knife pretty quickly. 4 times in the chest?! You think that is the same thing as a possible knife attack. What is that you say? You can fark right off with that bullshiat logic.
Once again, there is no shooting-to-wound.
If someone is firing a gun, they are using deadly force. If they are not justified in killing someone, they shouldn't be shooting at them.
If you defund the police, who would've been called when this situation occurred? The cops didn't just show up, they were called there.
What do you think a social worker is going to do if she shows up there and people are kicking each other in the face and stabbing each other?

it literally does not mean to remove ALL, all is not in the definition. I had a project that was defunded at work, I still have a job AND get paid.
durbnpoisn:WelldeadLink: durbnpoisn: It wasn't. Period. No police shooting is justified. This is especially true when the dead person didn't have a gun themselves.

You can fark right off with that bullshiat logic.
Across the board, those who train police officers AND military say you aim for center mass. Trying to hit the leg, or an arm, of a moving target is pretty near impossible and only increases the chances that the shot will go wide, possibly hitting something or someone else.
When someone is actively trying to injure or kill another, as was the case in the body cam video, you have very little time to react. To say this officer should have shot the knife-wielding girl in the leg is being purposely disingenuous, at best.
Or maybe you have some other agenda here, I don't know.
Actually, now that I've typed out this response to you, I'm hit with the realization that anyone who says police in this country should be completely disarmed should not be taken seriously. But I'm posting this anyway, because I've already typed it out.
If that officer had no tbeen armed, the girl in pink would have been injured and quite possibly dead. If you see something else in that video, you, like a typical Trumper, have been driven around the bend by anger and hatred. Whether that anger and hatred is justified doesn't matter to me. Your beliefs are more important to you than the evidence of your senses.

Shoot her in the leg. I bet she would drop the knife pretty quickly. 4 times in the chest?! You think that is the same thing as a possible knife attack.
What is that you say? It's harder to hit someone in the leg? WTF kind of training do we give our cops that a kill shot is the first option? Seriously... What a load of crap.

Snort: whidbey: Snort: Watched the video. Wonder how the woman/girl she was trying to stab feels.
She was in the act of attacking when shot.
This one will fizzle.
Tragic all around.
Funny how "watch the video" always means "be on the side of racism."
Every time.
You see what you want to see and not what is. Try realism rather than crying racism. Every time
The realism is you're doing exactly what racists do. They tell us to "watch the video" and it always happens to be not on the side of the person whose rights are being violated. Rittenhouse and Floyd come to mind.
You farked up dude.

Which exactly, of Ma'Khia Bryant's rights were violated? The right to rush up to a person, pin them against a car and stab them?

So are we just going to pretend there isn't outrage over this police killing?
